Free Motorola w376g or LG 410g

A few weeks ago I reported on the Valentine’s Day offer from TracFone, which packaged a free, refurbished Samsung T301g along with a a 60 minute card for $19.99. That deal is gone, but there are a couple more free refurbished phone deals to take its place, and both are eligible for the ongoing $3 discount code (see below).

First, the ever-popular Motorola w376g is back, once again packaged with a 60-minute card.

The other deal, which is something I’ve never seen on TracFone’s site before, is a refurbished LG 410g free with a 60-minute card. The LG 410g was never a very popular phone, but I did review it last year: LG 410g review.

One important thing to note about these models: the w376g includes DMFL, while the 410g does not. Aside from that, they both have their advantages, but in general I would say that the w376g is the way to go for anyone using at least 50 minutes a month, just for the DMFL. If you’re using less than that, it might be worthwhile to do a little more comparison.

New TracFone and Net10 Models – LG 231C, 320G, 420G, 620G and 900G, Samsung T105G and T155G

A few days ago I got a hot tip from a reader, Steven, who found evidence of new models coming soon to TracFone and/or Net10. He was looking at the website of the FCC, which must approve new handsets before they are released to the public. On that site, Steven has found seven different models that all appear to be headed for Tracfone or Net10.

Five of these new models are from LG, and all but one are GSM models. There are also two new Samsung models awaiting FCC approval, both GSM. Below is Steven’s summary of the upcoming models, with some of my notes in brackets:

The LG 231C is a CDMA 1x phone with a camera, bluetooth, and GPS (note that all new phones must have GPS to comply with E911 laws). [Note that the GPS capability doesn't necessarily mean that the phone will support GPS applications for navigation, just that the phone can report its location back to the nearest cell tower.] It is the successor to the LG 220C.
The LG 320G is a GSM phone and is most likely a candybar style.
The LG 420G is a GSM phone with a camera and bluetooth. Based on the model number it is the successor to the LG 410G so most likely it is the same form factor (flip).
The LG 620G is a GSM phone with camera, bluetooth, MP3 player, and FM radio.
The LG 900G is a GSM phone and that is all I know about it. Based on the model number I assume it is a higher-end model.
Two new Samsung models also appear. The Samsung T105G and the Samsung T155G. I’m not sure what to make of the model numbers. What I do know about them is that they are GSM phones and will have SMS text messaging capability.

Steven went on to say that he is not aware of a release schedule for these models, but most likely the Samsungs will precede the LG’s. It also seems possible, based on previous experience, that the Samsungs will be released simultaneously, and all of the LG’s will come out at approximately the same time as well.

LG 290c Review Videos

I’ve had some people asking more about the LG 290c and wanting a better look at it, so I recorded a few videos to give you a better look.

I have to apologize, because for a variety of reasons these videos are not up to my usual standards – I was coming down with a cold, so my voice was pretty rough. I was also recording in my basement instead of my office, so the background was bad and I didn’t have my usual camera set up. I also failed to realize how little screen detail the camera was capturing from the 290c until I had finished recording. Anyway, these videos are a little weak, but I hope they at least add some value as far as conveying more information. Here they are:

On the front page of their web site, TracFone advertises a few promotional codes, most of which we’ve already known about for some time, as well as one new code. The new code is 71172, which awards 60 bonus minutes with the addition of a 120 minute card. The other codes are as follows:

  • code 54630 for 20 bonus minutes on a 200 minute card
  • code 73264 for 200 bonus minutes on a 1-year, 400 minute card
  • code 61500 for 250 bonus minutes on a 1-year, 800 minute, DMFL card

Perhaps a more interesting deal is the offer of the Samsung T301g in a package deal, this time bundled with a 60-minute card. For $19.99, you can get a free (reconditioned) T301g, which includes standard Double Minutes for Life, along with a 60-Minute card.
