LG 800g Review Part 1 – First Impressions

First, I want to apologize again for being so slow to review the LG 800g and LG 500g. The release of these models has actually come at a terrible time for me, as I’ve discussed previously. I’ve been trying to keep up with the comments and failing miserably, and made very little headway on the actual review of the 800g, let alone the 500g (which I just took out of the package today).

Anyway, I’ll try to do my best to provide the information you need. In the mean time, I encourage you to look through the comments whether you have a question to ask, or if you already have the phone and think you might be able to answer a question for someone else. The pages with a lot of comment activity are as follows:

http://www.pbush14.com/2011/04/18/lg-800g-review/

http://www.pbush14.com/2011/04/22/lg-800g-now-from-tracfone-com/

http://www.pbush14.com/2011/04/21/lg-800g-for-tracfone-free/

Anyway, here are early thoughts on my LG 800g review:

I was pleasantly surprised with the responsiveness of the touch screen. I have an iPod touch which I use extensively, and I was a little afraid that the Apple device would set the bar so high that I could only be disappointed with the LG 800g. Thankfully, I was wrong.

The screen on the 800g is a “resistive” touch screen, whereas that on the iPod touch (as well as the iPhone and most Android and other touch-screen smart phones) is “capacitive.” Here’s a link to Wikipedia where the difference is explained. In short, with the resistive type screen on the 800g, it will take a little more pressure since your touch must press two layers of the screen together in order to complete a circuit. So you’ll need to be a little more forceful with the 800g.

Still, though, I have been satisfied with the performance of the 800g screen. And reading through the comments, it seems like a majority of other users are happy with it as well.

Most people seem to also be happy with the sound quality. I did a side-by-side comparison with my 900g on Net10, which I use as my primary phone. Both use the same network, and I tested them in the same environment. Based on this testing, the definitely 900g sounded clearer to me.

Similarly, as far as the transmission of audio to the other party, the audio was clearer coming from the 900g. Based on these two factors, I would score the call quality on the 900g at 8 out of 10, while on the touch screen I would give it only a 6. I would say that the 800g is passable, but not good.

As I have time, I’ll test out the many features of the phone. Here’s a rough list of the features, along with my early comments if I have had time to test them out:

Camera
– I haven’t tested it thoroughly, but it seems to work well and produce decent images.
Bluetooth
- I have struggled to transfer contact lists via bluetooth, from several other phones.
mp3 player
- not fully tested yet.
memory slot
- I have a 8gb microSDHC card scheduled to be delivered early next week, but as far as I can tell the jury is still out as to whether the 800g can accept cards larger than 4gb.
Virtual QWERTY keyboard
– appears when composing text messages.
TracFone version includes DMFL

That’s all the info I’ve got for now, but I hope my life will settle down a little more by next week, so I can get back to reviewing phones like I love to do. In the mean time, you can check out the comments on the pages mentioned above, or take a look at the specs on these phones below:

    • Cookie – it definitely has a full qwerty while texting – you can choose the t9 method if you want it, though. In this video I show the QWERTY:

    • Look for accessorie items for the LG T310. This is the original cookie style (wink, plum) version. Its one of the three T300 series LG phones.

      • Also a bunch (all in pink) on Amazon @ $4 with free shipping. But I am not sure how the “skin” works.
It looks like it has to be peeled back to use the touch screen, correct? All I was relly looking for was an
        edge protector (from drops, etc).
        Thanx, RAS

  1. I called the LG help and they told me that it only will take a 4 GB micro card. I have been having trouble getting a bluetooth connection with my computer or my car. Anyone else having that problem?

    • Hiker – I haven’t tried using Bluetooth since my computer doesn’t have that capability, but I have successfully connected my phone to my computer using a USB cable. My wife has an Amazon Kindle and the USB cable it has works for our phone. Additionally, my Kodak digital camera’s USB cable also has the right connections that allowed me to hook up my phone to the computer (worked on vista and XP). If you have some digital devices that have USB cables, you might see if they have the right connections to hook up your phone. The hook-up was as easy as “plug-and-play” in my case.

      • Ihad the same problem at first. Then I nothice under the “Bluetooth” setting the menu item “my Device Visibility”.
The selections are “Hidden” and “Visible for 3 Min”. I have 2 LG800g and they both work the same way. Have your other bluetooth ready to connect and click on “Visible for 3 Min” and it will make connection for then and and then on. I am not sure why the 3 mins however I couldn’t get a connection because it reverts back to “Hidden”. After you make the connections it will work forever…. go figure.
Also I tried 2 different 8gb cards and neither would work however the 4 Gb cards work fine. Love the phone and have had them since about 1 after they came out.

    • My present Verizon phone service works with my UConnect in my car and I was told by HSN that this one would also. I just tried to program it and it didn’t work. I then called Tracfone and they said it doesn’t have the technology to work with UConnect in my car, and that did disappoint me since I can drive handsfree with that feature and abide by the no cell phone laws. Ugh…other than that, so far I like it (but I just got it yesterday.)

      • Hi Deone
I’d also suggest checking with the dealership where you bought the car, if applicable. Others have had luck going back to the people that know the car best, rather than the phone.

  2. Also if you want to transfer pictures and music to/from the phone and PC you can get a micro sd card and a card reader that can read such a card (or card reader that can read sd card and microsd/sd adapter). Then you can drag and drop files from PC to card or from card to PC.

My daughter has a LG Neon from ATT gophone and that’s how she transfers music, ringtones and pictures from PC to her phone.

    No cable or bluetooth needed.

  3. Just to let everybody know I found a usb cable at the Doller store. I live in upstate NY. It is a blue and white with purple on the package and the middle is clear. It says “60 in. usb cable Type A male to micro 5 pin. I tried it with a mp3 and a pic and transfered fine on my comp. and to the phone.

    • I got the same one only in black from the same eBay seller– in Hong Kong. What I liked better about this particular one over the covers on eBay for the LG T310 is that some of the cover/skin goes over the 3 buttons at the bottom on the front of the phone. I feel that it is protecting the buttons better from dust or pressing them. Just my humble opinion. I for one really needed a cover because I’m so clumsy and broke my Samsung T301 when I dropped it. I really like this cover for the LG 800, same as Russ’s but in black. I see that these are now available in the U.S.: http://cgi.ebay.com/LG-800G-silicone-rubber-case-sleeve-skin-cover-LG800G-/200623120142?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2eb611df0e and in clear/white.

      • I will also share with you that I ordered this case for the LG 800 but have yet to receive it, so don’t know about the fit. I saw one like this at Walmart, put my LG 800 in it and that one fit. It was Body Glove #868339 and it was $16.97. I think this is the same but a Universal, not Body Glove. Hopefully it’s the same size. I will let you know after I get it. Big difference between $16.97 and $5.80.

        http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120708579587&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

      • Update: this is about the case I bought in my comment below. The case was exactly like the Body Glove™ I saw in Walmart #868339…. It was a Body Glove™. Another number on the back of the package was CRC91365, the number in the eBay auction…… The Walmart Body Glove™ and the one I got on eBay is one and the same. I was so happy when I opened the shipping envelope and saw that…………big difference in price like I said previously. What’s good about this case is that there is a window to see the phone’s screen, don’t necessarily need to take the phone out if you only want to look at the screen. I can still press the 3 buttons on the front bottom and press and hold the unlock icon on the main screen. Another plus is I have my LG 800 in a silicone rubber skin (as stated in the comment above) and it still fits in this case. Highly recommend this case.

  4. “Also if you want to transfer pictures and music to/from the phone and PC you can get a micro sd card and a card reader that can read such a card (or card reader that can read sd card and microsd/sd adapter). Then you can drag and drop files from PC to card or from card to PC.”

Not a big deal either way, but the usb cable available cheaply on eBay and elsewhere would be simpler than removing the micro card each time.

    • Hi Mike,
I ordered the 5-pin male to USB from W-wart. The only port on my phone is for the power input and I was hopeful that would also work for exporting data. But whle I get an acknowledgment chirp when I plug it in, my laptop is not finding the phone (like any camera). IS there something I am missing here? Thanx, RAS

    • Just like Cindy said on May 13, I got my cable at Dollar Tree for a buck. I live in SW Florida but Dollar Trees are nationwide. They are not always in stock. I was just lucky and happen to have it already bought before LG 800 was released. I buy a lot of electronics in Dollar Tree, but only when particular items are available (same with Big Lots),

  5. Does anybody know of a software program that lets you connect your phone via cable or Bluetooth to manage and transfer your phone book to and from your computer? I need one that works with different brands of phones. Thanks JMC

  6. I have seen a few posts that state only a 4gb card will work. Are these the 4GB sd or 4GB hcsd. Have been looking online for a card and some websites state that all devices are not compatiable with hcsd cards.

    Thanks.

  7. If you have an Office Depot where you live they have a Sandisk 4gb micro sdhc card for 9.95 that works perfectly.

  8. Only reason I keep tryin’ to find info on this phone is to see how the Motorola EX 124G is better. ANyway I found this.

One of the reason I didn’t like this one is the Cartoonist Phone Theme. I quess it is possible to change it cause they did on there Tracfone Model of this phone.

  9. A Pbushx can mind doing a video or just a screenshot of the different themes for this phone in yo review. Its little minor detail but it does matter to me.

  10. I read that this phone has SNS Integration. Basic Twitter App & Facebook Built In App. Is this True. Let me know someone.

    • DMC – No, it doesn’t have either of those as apps but you can probably find apps for those at Getjar or MobileRated. I have a FaceBook page but don’t use it much so I don’t really care to use up my minutes to access it on my Tracfone.

  11. When go to Voice Recorder and record a name to add to a contact on my LG 800, and push “set as” I get a defolt which reads “unsupported me

  12. ON my LG800. After using “voice recorder” and trying to use it on a contact, I get “unsupported media type” when I push “set as”. is there a fix.

  13. Looks like the LG800 no longer has the 60 minute card and the promo code is no longer good. I was all set to buy it if it had the 60 min card with it.

    • It`s also only available thru the Tracfone website with T-Mobile SIM`s. They have removed it from the AT&T markets.

There is also speculation, based on what CSR have said, that there is a problem with some of the AT&T SIM`ed 800`s.

  14. I will wait…maybe there will be a Father’s Day Special! I have a LG 600 tracfone now with DMFL. Was thinking of upgrading to something better. (still works for me since I am an emergency only user)

  15. Can anyone tell me if it takes longer to text on the LG800G due to the fact that it has a virtual keyboard as opposed to having 3D buttons to text on. It was mentioned that you have to press harder on the touchscreen as the LG800G has a resistive touch screen which I think could mean that it would slow you down whilst texting, can anyone put any light on this subject as I think this LG800G is really amazing value for money.

    • vanessa – Personally I really like the virtual keyboard of the LG800G – although I have not owned a phone with the full “QWERTY” keyboard buttons, I have gone to Radio Shack where they have a LG900G on display and I spent quite a bit of time practicing typing on that display model. For me, I like the virtual keyboard better because the individual letters are a little bigger than the buttons are on the LG900G. That makes typing text messages a little easier for me. As for pressing harder, you don’t have to press very hard at all – maybe compared to an Iphone it’s harder, but still it’s not like you are pressing hard into the phone’s display. I like that you have use of the full screen when you want it, like to view pics and web pages, and a keyboard is not taking up part of the screen space. But when you need the keyboard, it pops up. That’s smart, to me. However, there are times when you only have the numeric keypad (as opposed to the full QWERTY keyboard) – that is for adding new and searching for contacts, and for web page entries and searches. If you install an alternative web page browser, such as Opera mini, you can get around that issue, as Opera mini allows for the full QWERTY keyboard to be used with its browser.

  16. my thoughts Vanessa is that the QUERTY keyboard even if touch sensitive would still be faster to type with than the t9 method. You wouildn’t have to be hunting for the keys and having to keep switching from # to letter etc or hitting the keys several times to get to the correct letter.

  17. I have a question on the sound when it rings. My LG600g only has 5 bars and I don’t feel it is loud enough. Many times if in my purse I miss calls cause I did not hear the phone ringing. The phone I have before was a Motorola with AT&T and it had 7 bars and I was able to hear it fine.

So is the ring lound enough or still on the poor side for the LG 800g. (I am hoping it is louder)

    • The LG 800G has 7 bars. I would NOT say that the loudest setting is really loud. Loudness is not easy to describe.

    • Chris – regarding loudness it also depends on what ring sound you select. Some of the ring sounds are “louder” and easier to hear than others – you just have to test the different ones and see which one is best for you. This one that sounds like a xylophone sounds pretty loud to me – so does the one that sounds like the old style AT&T rotary phone ringing.

      • RE: Ring loudness – I set the LG 800G to vibrate when receiving a call. I will feel it vibrate in my pocket before I hear the ring tone.

  18. I paid for mine on AT&T so when I switched to Tracfone most rigntones were not worth loading and the ones availabel on line were just as bad so I used my recorder on my phone and saved it for my ringtone allowing to let me keep my old one from my ATT account. (but I can’t make it as loud as I would like)

    Thanks for the replies.

  19. Chris, I feel your pain. Don`t you just Hate when that happens? Gee Wizz, Ringtones are so damn important, and silly me thought that their entire purpose was to alert you that you either had an incoming call or a message.

  20. I’ve use tracfone for many years, currently I use an LG600g, which works well to text and talk, but is quite imperfect, and is anything but “smart” LOL.

I’ve been waiting for Tracfone to offer an upgrade, and am curious about the LG800g, which is available in my area. I’ve read the reviews and comments, and am wondering if I should go for it now, or wait a while and see if in 6 months or so if something better is available. It already seems that I’ve been waiting forever.

  21. Just bought my LG800g from the guy on ebay (shopcelldeals.com) for 49.99 (comes with 200min card) I was thinking if this doesn’t pan out then at least I only am out of 10.00 for the phone since a 200min card cost 39.99 + tx. I’ll let you know it it was a good deal once I get my phone and activate it. (hoping no problems with it since the deal is non refundable)

    • Did the phone from shopcelldeals come with an AT&T sim card or a TMobile. Although maybe it doesn’t make a difference because I have heard rumblings that AT&T is taking over TMobile. Not sure though, so I would love to know before I buy.

Shopcell is a wonderful seller, I’ve used them before for both cards and for two other tracfones, the T301G and the LG290

      • I guess the answer would be AT&T (when I tested to what my email address would be if I sent an email from my phone) I had AT&T previously and transfered # from old phone to the new one and still had the same AT&T connections. You are correct about AT&T buying out Tmobile market. (or do I have that confused with the recent announcement of Time Warner cable buying out certain southern market)

  22. Hoping for a direct download of pix on the camera to my XP computer. When I hook up with the USB and 5-pin male adapter, there is an acknowledgment chime, but it the phone seems to be hidden. Tried resetting the bluetooth visibility option — hoping to be lucky — but no dice. Anyone know how to do this? Thanx, RAS

    • Concerning Richard’s connect via USB: Maybe someone can confirm this, I suspect you need external the memory card installed in the phone (4Mb max I gather). Also on mine the phone asks “Connect Mass Storage” and I have to touch “Yes” on the phone for it to be accessable by PC. Works for me on XP and 7.

      Will

      • That is absolutely correct, Will. I did install a 4 GB micro SDHC card, was able to connect to mass storage, and thought my problems were over, or at least some folders show up as my E drive.

Problem is they are all empty and the folks @ Tracfone told me to set Primary Storage to external memory — no big deal. Even with that option selected under Memory Settings — and this is wierd — everything still saves to phone memory (easy to track by watching Internal Common Memory), and I cannot access that from my pc. Further thoughts?
        Thanx again, RAS

        .

      • Will,
To answer my own (not so clever) follow-up question regarding storage of pics in external memory (where my pc can see them). That option must also be selected under camera options, since the default location is phone memory.
Then everything shows up fine when I connect to “mass storage.”
        RAS

  23. I get an error message when trying to log in to my office URL exchange mail account, which is a secure website. Anone know
if that is a fixable problem? Thanx, RAS

    Chanoman writes on June 1,2011:

As of June 1st, the LG800 is available in AT&T markets from Net10 & Tracfone, So have the issues with AT&T sim’ed LG800′s been resolved? I’m interested in this phone, but I don’t want to buy a problem. Any input is appreciated.

  25. Yes I see that the LG800g is now back on sale on Tracfone. Wehn it wnet missing I took a chance and bought one for 49.99 and got a 200 minute card instead of the 60min that they are offering with the phone on Tracfone. My deal I get my phone for $10.00 if you subtract the cost of a 200 min card. Sweet….now if only I can get it activated. There was a problem with what my curent phone has for min and days showing and what was to be transfered. They were going to give me a few min more but less days???? Not sure why my phone and on line data does not match.

  26. The LG 800G is now available in all 6 Tracfone markets (this includes both AT&T and T-Mobile service)

If you do not understand how the markets influence the service provider you need to ask.

  27. There has been no updated information on problems with the 800G with AT&T SIM`s in at least a week now, not that i am aware of at least.

  28. Tracfancier, I’m not clear on what your 6 market comment means or who it’s directed to. Maybe I wasn’t clear. I wasn’t stating that the lg800 was available only in AT&T markets. Just that I found it listed using AT&T sim zip codes as well as T-mobile sim zip codes. I wasn’t trying to dispute you, I was mainly just trying to determine what the issue was, and if it had been resolved. I’d be interested in an explanation of the 6 markets and their effect, if you care to elaborate. Thanks, Chano

    • Looks like I have good cause to worry that my posts might not be clear or misunderstood. Tracfone pushes T-Mobile service even when AT&T is much better. Many will order using another zip code to foil Trac`s attempt to stick them with T-Mobile service. The following helpful Info is from Jimates website:

Here are some zip codes for the different market areas

      CO = CDMA
      some CDMA only zip codes are: 05350, 05408, 12752, 23192, 28640, 49739, 51355, 54969, 57401, 59802, 73946, 73949 82210, 82801, 95429, 96130

      GSM4 = AT&T
      some AT&T only zip codes are: 00902, 65046, 65287, 76801, 76825

      GSM5 = TMobile
the zips I had here all recently changed to GSM5AT. Use the COGSM5 zip for only T-Mobile phones. 82001

GSM5AT = TMobile (with AT&T only when necessary)
      some GSM5AT zip codes are: 02115, 04901, 07803, 10550, 14618, 15301, 21788, 47803, 54701, 60609, 87107, 93274, 95608

      COGSM4 = CDMA & AT&T
      some COGSM4 zip codes are: 04654, 12720, 15904, 15931, 18231, 27530, 47978

      COGSM5 = CDMA & TMobile
some COGSM5 zip codes are: 82001

  29. When you are on a Trac phones offering page look at your address bar and you will see the market area as part of the URL. You may change the market area in your displayed URL and it will take you to that market.

  30. Tracfancier, Thanks for elaborating. I was aware of the different markets, and how to determine what zips to use to get the most suitable sim, but I guess I didn’t understand what you were trying to say about the markets influencing the provider. I thought you were alluding to some other factor that providers use to determine coverages. Now I’m clear. Thanks again, Chano

  31. tracfancier….I am not sure I understand how you find tht url. I wnet to tracfone, selected my phone and do not see anything in the url that suggests the markets…and don’t see any codes. Can you give me a blow by blow step of how you view that info or get to it. thanks

Also would like to hear from LG800 purchasers just how long iot took for their phones to get activated. It is now 10 hours and my phone is still not activated. Only took them one nano second to stop my old one. This is unexcepoable to me. I bought the 800 based on reviews here but going on line to FB Tracfone Wireless there are not too many happy new owners with a LG800 phone. I hope I won’t become one of them.

  32. Thanks Tracfancier for the link. I clicked on it and it brought me right to the page and saw the code you are talking about. It is a long url for my browser so I had to click inside the brower and used my arrow keys to scroll thru it and it showed the whole url from start to finish.

When you say you called Miami Corporate # is that the number for customer service where if you can’t do something on line they tell you to call 1-800-867-7183 or is it something other than this one.

    • Miami number is 800-876-5753, daytime hours. If they are tied up or past hours it will ring thru to regular CS.

  33. Regarding the url, thought this might help others. Once I clicked on the url and it brought me to where I had to go, the name of the page is called “Tracfone Site Phone List Page”. Maybe this might help or make it a bit clearer for “market comment”.

  34. You must have a microSD or microSDHC card installed before your USB cable will show a data connection. The USB cable can only access the microSD/microSDHC card, not the sim or internal memory,

  35. So, what`s the difference between a COGSM4 Market from a GSM4 Market? They, I believe, are both AT&T Coverage SIM Card Markets, right?

    • COGSM4 is a dual market. CO = CDMA/Verizon and GSM4 = GSM/AT&T. Both type phones are offered. If you see a 5 anywhere its T-Mobile GSM. Look above at my post of 6/2 and you will see all six markets posted.

  36. Thanks to all whom I might have overlooked with replies. I got a microSDHC card from Targets for 14.99 and waiting for Walmart to send me a cable for about $5.00. Targets bought in person. Probably could have found something cheaper but was in the store…cable had been already ordered. I had a 4GB but turned out it wasn’t a micro so had to go ahead and purchase the card after the cable…(boy is Walmart so in delivery) So far my texts seem to be working. The only thing so far that are cons for me is 1) when adding a contact I might have swiped the screen by accident and they were dialed. 2) the phone isn’t like what I am used to and so can’t tell if the phone is off or on like I can with flip phone. At first I thought the lock on the screen tuned the phone off so no calls but tht is not true. Also my phone was actually off yesterday and it started to send me a text from Tracfone. Can they actually do that when your phone is “OFF” New technology…new problems. First thing I did was to see if any minutes had been deducted.

  37. tracfancier, Thanks for that update. I knew that the COGSM4 was a dual Market offering (both) CDMA & GSM Coverage in the same area. But, like you posted earlier, Tracfone often switches back and forth with its SIM cards if both AT&T and T-Mobile coverage is in the same area. I prefer AT&T Coverage both in my local area and when I`m traveling over T-Mobile. If I order a Tracfone in my area which shows up as a COGSM4 Market, its a 50/50 chance that you will get a AT&T SIM Card or T-Mobile SIM Card. My wife`s phone with Tracfone has a T-Mobile SIM. Accordingly, where I`m located in a COGSM4 market area, the only way I can be sure of getting a phone with a AT&T SIM is to order a phone using an ZIP Code that shows up in an exclusive GSM4 Market.

    • Yours is the first report I have seen of receiving a T-Mobile SIM with a GSM phone ordered from the COGSM4 market.

It`s evident Trac receives a better price for T-Mobile minutes and might be looking closer at coverage so as to “stick” more people with T-Mobile. They don`t choose the provider with the best coverage for the customer. Thats why I advise every time you use a zip code for GSM4, look up at the URL and varify they have not changed it to a T-Mobile market.

  38. My LG600 had an email address as AT&T so when I upgraded to LG800 and kept my same Phone # does the service still stay with AT&T or can it still switch.

  39. Thanks Trac….looks like its still AT&T..Good news for me. I am in awe at how you find out all these things. Good thing we have you helpping on here.

  40. Okay I have a 4gb micro shHC card installed. Just recieved my usb cable. Connected to my pc and phone and find nothing. The instructiions in the booklet say to go to my E drive (That is my DVD/CD +RW drive on my computer. When I plug something in it shows up on my F drive. I thought I would be able to view what is on my camera, some photos I took and 2 videos. I am at a loss as to how to do this. I do have a card reader. Am I supposed to take the micro SDHC memory card out of my phone and connect and read it that way? Right now when I connect via usb to PC in my F drive are about 5 folders…games and apps, images, etc but theys are all empty. I am not sure where to go on my phone to check for the save to external memory as someone mentioned in a previous post above. Is ther any place I can look this up and it will direct me??? only a newbie with this and not sure what the heck I doing here.

    • Chris,
I am a real igoramus about his stuff and finally had to call Tracfone to find out. Everything will still save to phone memory (hidden from your p.c.) rather than external memory (which will show up as an E or ? F drive) unless you change the camera settings. If you don’t, your E drive folders will be there, but are always empty. I thought the phone would be programmed to do this automatically, but not so.

Sooo, under camera, go to the settings icon and scroll to second screen — make sure there is a picture of a chip rather than a phone where it says “select storage”, and bingo, any other pics/videos you have will be transferrable to your p.c.

I have not looked, but I supect muscic, etc, will be the same way.

      • Richard… I think all the images, videos taken before changing the settings to external (chip icon) and before are not able to be transfered or viewed in your F Drive on the computer. The only solution would be to email them to yourself and then save to PC and drag to the memory card but some files are too large to send via email so that step is pointless. (as far as I can tell unless someone else knows how to get arround this.

  41. After reading all that confusion about Chris attempting to mate his damn cell phone with his computer, I had to down a few pints of beer to reduce (my) stress level. Wow, I feel for you, man! Glad I only need to use my cell phone occasionally for a few outgoing or incoming calls. If I had to deal with all that crap, I`d throw the phone into a pond! I guess when it comes to Technology, you either embrace it or hate it, I guess you know where I stand.

  42. So is there any way I can get the files (imagees and 2 videos) onto the memory card because apparenetly it is empty) files still read as empty in the F drive. This is so frustrating cause I have nothing to reference to other than the posts above and I have been trying all the suggestions posted. I did go to the camera settings and selected the little icon that looks like a chip not mobile.

    • Chris,
Changing the picture storage site to external memory won’t work retroactively. Maybe you can attach one of the pics to a message, send it to yourself, and see if it can be saved to external memory and then retrieved on your p.c..

But quite frankly, I would e-mail or call Tracfone technichal help 1-888-251-8164 with that question. They generally pick up quickly and have been able to resolve my issues in the past. Just be sure to have the phone with you so they can walk you through it.

  43. PS:
Just couldn’t stand the suspense, Chris, so I tried sending my one remaining “phone memory” pic to myself, and bingo, when I saved the received image, it went to “external memory” — and I was able to retrieve it on my p.c. Of course, this isn’t free and there may be a way to do it without paying off Tracfone.

    • PPS: Chris, if you open one of your phone-saved pictures, go to the menu icon (lower left), then to “edit” and a storage icon will appear upper right — should be able to resave to external memory from there.

  44. Thanks for all your feed back Richard. I did try to save a photo I already had on my phone but nothing showed up. I also thought of sending it to myself via email and resend but didn’t wish to use the minutes (until I am forced to) Was hoping I could come up with another way. Maybe I’ll try my card reader and save it to PC and then transfer back and see if that iwll work. Right now I am getting too frustrated and spending too much time on the PC when its a beatiful day out. Time for a break. :)

  45. The videos give you an option to email but each time I’ve tried it says file is too big or what not. Why give you an option for video if you can’t email them. Grrrghh!!!!

  46. Cont’d….I am able to send an image to my F Drive sucessfully. Those photos show up in my gallery. I have sucessfully sent an image from phone to PC but still can’t figure out the ones that were taken with phone how to get them to show up in F drive. Also the ones I down loaded did not show up in the image folder (still show as empty) I dragged tehm to the image folder myself. Need to find a Cell phone for dummies handbook. This phone has so many features that I am finding but the manual doesn’t discuss them. Just the basics.

  47. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, If most people (only) had issues in their personal lives they were focused and driven on attempting to transfer a picture from their phone to their computer involving their F drive, hmm. Perhaps after further futile attempts your new dandy LG800g will end up catching a virus, worm, trojan horse, HIV, Aids, completely crash, get the dreaded “blue screen of death notification” that you committed a “fatal error” the phone will then either implode/explode, and your problems will be over, As you stated, Grrrrghh!

  48. I guess if one is to assume that being tormented by technology is a learning experience, then for many of us, death would be welcomed! Having a simple devise, like a (cell phone) aggravate and frustrate one with hours spent in a futile attempt to mate it with their computer to upload or download some pictures or other unimportant data is not what I would call a quality of life learning experience. But to each their own, I`d rather contemplate whether or not a bottle cap on a beer bottle is in fact a “twist off” or one that requires a bottle cap opener (before) I end up scraping off several layers of skin tissue from my finger. Proves that there (really) is a severe generation gap. Caution, extreme “texting” might cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. As far as the rumors of potential increased incidence of brain tumors caused by excessive use of cell phones, I would`nt worry about it. Even if proven true, future (technology) will find a solution for that too.

  49. Stupid me, I`m sure they already have an (app) for that too! When looking at some new Ford vehicles recently, I was informed that most had the availability of the SYNC powered by MicroSoft technology that would permit Blue Tooth connectivity, mp3 downloads, voice commands, etc. I told the salesperson I already had all the (sinks) that I needed in my home, thank you. But what about a Power Moonroof, I could make use of that…

  50. For those who have yet to purchase the LG 880G –

HSN (Home shopping Network) from time to time has the TracFone LG 800G available with TRIPLE minutes for Life, and 1200 minutes for only $99. That’s the best price going. They sell out fast, in one or two days, so if they are out, just wait and watch for them, then don’t wait purchase when they come on line again.

  51. Quick question regarding the apps. Do you have to use minutes to download them? Or am I missing the boat as to how you get the apps on the phone. Yeah, I’m technologically impaired!

  52. LG800g sounds like the perfect phone for a Tracfone user to have the closest thing to a smartphone. Well after two weeks of ownership and use today was the last straw for me and so I called to have my LG600 flip phone reactivated. (now just aiting for a new sim card. I had car trouble and tried calleing AAA. it asked for me to press “1″ if I was calling for assistance. When I went to do that I would notice my screen went to off and so touched the screen and lost the place I was at had to do that after several tries of same. The screen did not stay put due to the unlock feature then I found it had logged into browser settings trying to shut off / on and I lost 50 (probably would have been more had I not checked my phone at the time and found it had dones so. Also started to dial people when I was just scrolling for a name in contacts. This is a phone that has gone and turned itself into a nitemare. I want a simple pone first and formost where I know for sure it is on or off and does what I want it to do and not what it decides to do. Anyone want to buy my phone is welcome to it.

    • When your phone locks press the on/off button to quickly return to exactly where you were. I had my phone dial a few times and cannot remember what i was doing,, but it wasn`t dialing someone on purpose.

  53. I love reading these Horror Stories about “Cell Phones Gone Wild”! Makes me feel comfortable being an aging Dinosaur, an damn proud of it. And by the way Chris, were`nt you the one that posted that you were having (fun) learning and thought your only issues were dealing with attempting to transfer files to and from your computer E and F Files? The you found you could`nt call AAA and press option #1 on the TouchScreen? I`ll buy your phone with its curses and gremlins and just name it “Chuckie”! Thats for a good laugh! Remember your advice, Life is a learning experience that is (fun)….than you die, bet you wish your phone did, LMAO You just must “embrace” technology or be like me and let others embrace it for you.

    • Phil…I am an aging dinosaur also but I like learning knew things unless they start to drive me crazy. This phone compared to the others has way too many features and not all I believe are mentioned in the manual or visible or same as other phones I have had. Some I can figure out by myself (or will die trying) and others are beyond any of my knowledge or any Google searches for the answer….that is where my sledgehammer comes into action…LOL And yes to all the above questions about “Chris” (female version….you addressed me as a he) I am usually very persistant in finding my answers (about anything) at the same time I have a short tolerance for insanity. At least I am entertaining you if nothing else. Chuckie…haven’t named my phone in my Tracfone account yet. Maybe Chuckie it is ..or Chuckles after LMAO. :)

      • Chris, sorry for the “gender” mistake, pleased to know your a (she) rather then a he. On the matter of this LG800g Touchscreen Phone, I was about to replace my dumb basic easy to use flip phone for the more modern Touchscreen design. I still may do so but I think after hearing your horror story and my absolute zero tolerance for Technology grief, ( I own an iMac for just that reason) I will await the release of the Motorola EX124g and see if it might have less complicated issues. One Poster claimed the other soon to be released TF/NET10/ST Touchscreen Phone, the Samsung T528g, who his father had from a different cellular carrier was a monster nightmare and (he) was an admitted young techno-nerd, (mid-twenties) and it pushed him to the edge of insanity. I just want a simple easy to use phone to make and receive a few calls daily. If I can get one that looks stylish and modern but is simple to operate, I`ll buy it. Otherwise, I guess I`m sentenced to use a primitive looking candy bar or flip phone to avoid searching for that “sludge hammer”. If Life is too short to drink cheap beer, it is also in my humble opinion, too short to spend hours studying a phones user manual to learn how to operate it to make, receive, and occasionally text a few messages, just saying….

  54. Well Phil I am going to just wait now for your reviews and recommentations. The main reason I even thought of upgrading was to get a querty board so I didn’t have to take a half hour to just type a few words on my flip phone (only to have a “paragraph” response in 2 seconds and wonder how they did that so quick) The other things on the LG800 would have just been a bonus to use or not but like you I just want to make a simple call, or answer a call, maybe once in a while throw in a text. Also the screen is much larger and so are the numbers on the screen. I don’t have to guess if its an 8 or a 0.Would be nice if you could play with the phone to check out its features before buying. (but that only happens in a perfect world) Can’t believe I referred to myself as an aging dinosaur..that’s a first….moan. :P

To the person who mentioned hitting the on off to get back to my screen…thank you that really helps.

I am serious about getting rid of my LG800g..maybe will post it on ebay. (as soon as my sim card is recieved it goes on the market)

    • Chris, Funny how some people fight getting older and others like myself actually embrace it. No longer trying to compete in (anything) takes a lot of pressure off. I kinda think I`m sorta like George Bailey in the movie, It`s a Wonderful Life, The Christmas Classic. George like myself were perhaps, “born old”,lol. Think about a retired thoroughbred race horse that no longer has to risk its life any longer running at the Track and now just relaxes at a Farm in Keenland, KY eating sweet grass, drinking cold spring water, and occasionally has the chance to visit the Stud Barn and hook up with a frisky Philly. Damn, sign me up, who the hells need a cell phone anyway. Speaking of which, how often I have to remind some idiot talking too loud in a public place on their cell phone if they are old enough to remember when Telephone Booths with Pay Phones actually had bi-fold doors and that ones telephone conversation, “back in the day” was supposed to be a private matter. Oh well, I`ll keep you posted if I find and can operate a TouchScreen “dumb” phone that does`nt raise my blood pressure or give me a migraine headache. PS. It will have to be here since I don`t Facebook, You Tube, My Space, Tweet, Twitter, or …..

      • I believe you are fooling yourself if you believe any of the other possible touchscreens will be easier to operate than the 800. A touchscreen has to operate differently than a regular keypad phone. The basic functions are not that difficult. The advanced features are hard to pick up because of the lack of proprer instructions and explination.

  55. tracfancier, so if I understand your correctly, if one (like myself) would like to use a TouchScreen cell phone, it requires a lot more tech knowledge then pushing the keys on a flip or candy bar phone. Why can`t they make a simple Touchscreen devise that allows simple functionality like making, receiving and sending text messages without having to study a hundred pages of a user manual trying to learn to activate features you have no intention of ever using? I have no issue with having the device with the “potential” to (save the world), but can`t you just do simple functions without a headache? I use my computer for surfing, sending and receiving email, buying plane tickets, purchasing items on Ebay and Amazon, but I ,for the life of me cannot and have no interest in learning how to do anything else that the device has the power of doing. Some us use are very happy, just keeping it simple. There was a time when life existed without a app, honest, its true! Guess if I can`t handle the Motorola EX124g when it finally arrives, I will send it back within 30 days to Net10 or Straight Talk and have them send me a new SIM for my old “Dumb” Phone. They say you can`t teach and old dog new tricks, well this old dog does`nt want to learn any even if I could.

  56. tracfancier…what advanced features are we talking about here. In my case I didn’t have that many problems working the phone…my problem is when the phone doesn’t do what is is supposed to do and takes off on its own and calls people, doesn’t stay on long enough during my call andd the screen goes off to lock or dials the browser with out me knowing it….just got my new sim card…Hello old dinosaur phone.

Phil…I think we can blame this one on the iphone. technology is pushing us towards there so everyone copies it and wants the cutting edge. Guy I work with today told me he dooes everything on his ipone and very seldom uses a PC. Everyone wants instant…FB and Twitter also have some resposiblity for this new wave of technology. Soon your phone will be beaming you up to your next dsetination.

  57. I don`t particularly like having to learn how to use a never ending supply of new devices with slightly different operation. I haven`t found the 800`s basic operations hard to get used to. I don`t catch on as easily as when I was younger, and I have a horrible memory, but I`m not willing to give up yet on experiencing the newest technology, so I struggle on. It helps being semi-retired with time to read and learn what others have found and are reporting.

  58. tracfancier, I guess it`s all about if technology interests you. I`m bored with all of it and avoid it if possible. If they still made and repaired typewriters I`d still use one. Its not that I`m an idiot or can`t catch on, but I`d rather spend my time on other matters. I`ll leave high tech to my Doctors and the Hospitals to run their CAT Scans and MRI machines. I want a cell phone to call AAA if I need help or to receive an important phone call if I`m not at home. I don`t want a problematic device in my pocket waiting to aggravate me.

  59. I still have not found a way to get past the “unsupported audio type” when I record something and want to use it as a contact ring tone, and number 2, is there a way to stop the lock icon. I have caller doctors and Tracfone and when they ask to enter a number the screen is locked up and you have to unlock again and again. The screen should not lock when in a call. Is there a software update comming by dialing 555 in “add airtime”.

    • press: blue dice>settings>phone>auto-lock>choose; never – 10-20-30 or 60 seconds (it still “locks” when the screen goes black and pushing either of the three lower buttons just lights up the screen again for use). If you leave the lock on try a quick push of the on/off button to un lock and quickly return to exactly where you were.
The 555 to force airtime addition does work; press: menu>prepaid>add airtime>555>OK>YES or NO (then wait for your minutes/days to be added). A message about the system being busy indicates they don`t feel they owe you anything and you must call.

  60. Thats it! As much as I`d like the look of a TouchScreen Phone, if this (basic) LG800g “Dumb Phone” requires this much attention to go through menu settings to lock/unlock, press on/off button to unfreeze display, aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, where`s my damn Sledgehammer! If I tire of my Flip Phone, guess I`ll reactivate my old Motorola EM326g Slider Phone. Why is it so difficult to make a TouchScreen operate like a conventional push button activated phone, minus the buttons to push? If you have no intention of using all the high tech functionality, why must simple functions like making, receiving and texting as well as entering names and phone numbers in a memory file be so complicated? If I take a chance on the future Motorola EX124g, I have a hunch it will be going back before the 30 day return window expires. Do all the Apple iPhones have the same issues if all you want to do is simple tasks and don`t give a damn about acquiring a “zillion” apps? Maybe Jitterbug will finally come out with a TouchScreen Phone for “geezers”. I hate Adroids too!

    • My brother has one of those new HTC touchscreen smart phones which, because he lives with us, I’ve played with a number of times. Nothing for nothing, but it seems to be a million touches for everything. It has locked up, it has gone back to the home screen, applications have kept running even when I thought I was out of them. I really don’t even play with it anymore.

His phone is meant to and has taken place of his computer. But it is a tricky thing to use. Yes, he has downloaded some of the coolest apps out there with my personal favorite being the one that you can hold the phone to the radio while a song is playing and the phone will tell you the name of the song and who sings it.

But I think we have to remember how long it took home computers to get to the stage they are now. And in this case we have a prepaid phone company (not charging $80.00 a month) trying to make an affordable, albeit less featured, phone. It is going to take time to perfect.

As for me, I am back to using my R355 which pretty much does everything I need it to do plus more if I want to buy the computer cable and sdcard for it. I gave it up for a while to try the T301G and the LG290, but I really missed the keyboard, the loudness of the rings, and the call clarity. Plus it’s pretty cool looking without being a touchscreen. Maybe you might want to give that one a try although for some reason, it’s still the most expensive phone out there on Net10. I don’t think you can get it on Tracfone, but I could be mistaken.

Good luck with the search, but remember, sometimes the oldies are the goodies. One of my favorite phones was my Kyocera 126 although it didn’t get good reviews here, I still keep it as my backup in case something happens to my main phone.

    • Phil: The 800 and the 124 are both touchscreens and will operate very similiar to each other, which has to be different from a touchpad phone. Nothing wrong with buying a new model and returning it within the return period, it then becomes a refurb and someone will be happy to get it very nicely priced. Trac seems to be catering to the new technology and there is no telling what they will do in the future for those wanting simplicity.

Have you checked out the operation of the Moto 124? Here is a tutorials and user manual page for the phone. The tutorials will take you through the actual touches and resulting screens of lots of operations:
      http://tracfone.deviceanywhere.com/straighttalk/searchresults.seam?deviceId=727&locale=en_US&search

An I-phone would send you past the sledgehammer stage, you would be looking for a salvage yard with a maching for squashing cars into little cubes.

      • That Motorola looks same alsmost as the LG800g. I think I’d rather have a radio than songs. Probably should have waited till all the new phones similar came out. Wonder if Tracfone will stock this model. When conecting to a radio or bluetooth does it cost you minutes? I never used bluetooth device before. Don’t think can download a radio app on LG800g either. Saw a cool device sold on QVC for attaching to a keyring for any mobile. If you forget your phone anywheres it beeps within certain feet away from your phoen. So no more lost or left behind at home phones.

  61. tracfancier, thanks once again for the tip on the Apple iPhone. Guess I need not wait till the Fall for the release of the completely updated and refreshed new iPhone 5, LOL! I (do) want to try a TouchScreen Phone though and will give the Motorola 124g a go. Curious, its over double the price of the LG800g where Best Buy sells them for $39.95 compared to the Motorola EX124g at $99.95, must be for the (dreaded) added “features”. Just wondering, if your purchase the Phone from Best Buy, will Net 10 take the Phone back within 30 days with proper documentation or does that return policy only apply from Phones bought direct from Net 10? I figure that within a couple of weeks I will know if I can use this Motorola EX124g TouchScreen Phone for just simple basic needs without either pulling my hair out or resorting to the old Sledge Hammer remedy. The old Motorola EM326g awaits rebirth in a zip-lock bag just needing a new SIM Card and a battery recharge, just in case as a back up. I hope I need not return to the “rotary dial” land line telephone too.

  62. Lets hope that this new Motorola 124g will have a complete comprehensive owners manual instead of that little tri-fold quick reference user pamphlet. I do not want to have to download a ream of paper to look something up!

    • The Moto 124 has a slightly better camera and an FM radio compared to the LG 800. Did you not use the tutorial link I gave you a few posts earlier? It is the same exact Moto 124 phone. Phones are exactly the same from Tracfone/Net10/Straight Talk. I do not like the fact that in so many cases they refer to the use of the stylus in place of your finger when operating the Moto.

All stores have their own return policy. Not sure about BB but I know most WalMarts are 15 days. Need to varify how easy/difficult it is to return.

Phil; make sure you have enough hair to last through 15-30 days of trial use.

  63. tracfancier, I don`t scare easily but, I am prepared for a small dose of anxiety. With my 10mg. Valium tabs handy, I will cautiously proceed. If I run out of hair on my scalp, guess I`ll have to resort to looking (elsewhere). On the other hand, I might in deed “chicken out” if the early reviews indicate that simple functions on the Moto EX124g will be beyond my comfort level. Like an old Dinosaur, guess I`m preparing myself for (my) Ice Age where I`m likely going to get left behind with the technology bubble, oh well…I`ll face the end still enjoying eating Pizza and drinking Beer, none of which requires an app!

  64. I’ve just noticed that my dialpad doesn’t work during calls, preventing me from responding to those automated menu systems (press 1 to … ). I can display the dialpad, and when I press the numbers, the phone does beep and the numbers are displayed above the pad … but the menu message just keeps rattling off options and never responds to my entries. Is anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions how to fix it?

    • I just got off the phone with Tracfone customer service (in Miami) – they had me “refresh” my phone by powering down, removing the SIM for a minute, and powering back up. Much to my surprise, it worked!

It turns out there is a DTMF toggle in the context menu during calls – it seems to be on by default – why would anyone need to shut it off, I wonder?

  65. It`s there Bob, just so that you “Techies” don`t get bored. Everyone needs a challenge to keep your edge. These Phones seem to be just what the Doctored ordered! Calling Dr. Kevorkian….oooops, he died recently.

  66. I have the Net 10 version, and I seen on the box it had a facebook icon… I can’t find how to download the app. Can someone help me?

    • They are on Facebook but I think you may have isunderstood the ad because I don’t believe Tracfone does apps…at least not for now…maybe in the future or they will get left behind unless customers are like myself….emergency talking only once in a while texting.

  67. “No apps”? Then why do I have facebook on mine? And Castle Defender, and Google Maps, and … all the other apps I’m running …
@closethecase … I remember I used the web browser to go to facebook and when I got there, it was obvious how to get the app.

  68. I think I was thinking of the iphone and how you go and get an app. I think tracfone has built in ones…not really into net browsing on the phone so you possibly know more than I do. to get them I know you have to get a mini browser such as opera and download.

  69. Thanx, is that a dictionary type app or will it simply change the language my phone operates in? I’m looking for a translator type app

  70. looking for a sort of English/Spanish translator dictionary app. I found one on mobile 9, but it’s only a-f and I can’t figure out how to buy the rest
