For more detail, you may want to read my full review. Here are the links to that:
Here’s a page where I announced this new phone, as well as details on where to buy it.
How much did it cost?
This phone now comes bundled with 300 minutes, a case, wall charger, car charger, and headphone/earpiece for an amazing price of $59.99 at Wal-mart. I bought them for our whole family.
Could you tell me if the phone has a minute reminder.
Can you set it so that it sounds before you have talked for a full minute.
Thank you
Hi Kathy
Yes, it does, kind of – you can go to settings>sound settings>minute minder. That will have the phone beep a couple quick beeps right at the one-minute mark (and, I believe, each full minute after that).
Hope this helps.

How is the ringtone volume of this phone compare to Motorola tracfone. Is it loud enough? Thanks. I hope Tracfone offer this phone in their website.
The ringtones on this model are as loud as any of the Motorolas as far as I can tell. It’s a little hard to compare them since they don’t have the exact same tones, but the T401g has excellent volume on the ringtone, when set at the highest setting.
Does anyone know if this model will come out as a Tracfone any time soon?
I’m wondering the same thing. I really want this phone on TracFone.
me too, i hope they get it soon too, …and sell it for $2
i dont think thats possible maybe $50 but not $2
No- Tracfone dosn’t support anything that good yet – but i did try this new one called Lg 290c it dosn’t even look like a tracfone
i think if ur younger and into nicer phones then thats a great one to start off with
) Good Luck
I LIVE IN FLINT MICHIGAN IS IT AVALIBLE AT ANY STORES SUCH AS KMART WALMART RADIO SHACK TARGET BEST BUY ANY STORE AT ALL >>?
I found the T401G at several Walmarts in AZ for $59 on sale during the first part of Dec. This phone is now on Net10′s website for $79.
I found this phone at several best buys. i was looking for a store that sold it online because i was planning on ditching my motorola em326g for the samsung
What price was it at Best Buy? You can get it from Net10 directly for $72.
Ummm… I believe it was $30 for the T401g on Black Friday @ best buy in my area, but I was more concerned with the purchase of a TV at the time, which I happened to get a 23″ samsung Lcd HDtv/comp monitor for only 219.99 from Office depot, so I would say I don’t mind missing the black friday sale for the phone, because I only had to pay $60 for it at Walmart, like now, they have them for $60, and Super Walmart, as opposed to having to pay the $330 office depot wanted for that TV the day after black friday haha. But yes, in southern california here, best buy had it advertised in their black friday ad, a T401g, for $30…(not to mention the 300 mins that comes with the phone), so if you were already a net10 customer, and happened to need a refill on minutes anyway, this phone practically could have purchased itself! As far as the video stuff is concerned, I’ve tried a couple things, and am continuing to try different converters and file extensions to find that flawless solution for everyone, as I am in like 3 bands, so I work around alot of media firms anyway… What I have found on my own, it would seem the camcorder on the phone shoots in .Mp4 ….but it’s a special .Mp4 that you can’t find just by looking on your phone, I think it is .Mp4V to be exact, which means, when you shoot video, then say bluetooth it, or data cable transfer it to a computer, unless you have a bunch of off the wall shareware video converter applications, you’re going to have trouble playing these vids back with say…Quicktime, or Windows Media Player, the vids first need to be converted by a video converter into a more generic .Mp4 (not .Mp4V) that is recognized and viewable by most of the main media players on PC or Mac. I happen to Be on a newer Intel based Macbook, 2.4 ghtz, OSX 10.56 Leopard, so like I said in the post above, if you own a newer mac that is bluetooth enabled, the T401g communicates and transfers files FLAWLESSLY. THe other thing I noticed as far as video is concerned, is if you want to put a video on you phone to be viewed through the phone’s “Media Player” it doesn’t seem to recognize the videos if they are .Mp4, so If you are adding video to the phone from you’re computer, the best format I’ve found to be stable and recognized, was probably .3GP (.3gpp), and I believe .wmv also worked as well, but you will just have to experiment. I haven’t found the perfect solution yet, but Go Download KIGO Video Converter Pro, just google search, make sure you are downloading it from their site, this is the only converter program I’ve found so far that seems to let convert to and from and file format available out there, and there are many edits as well, such as resolution, bitrate, framerate, and audio type and quality that can be edited while you’re converting you’re vids….hope this helps, I will continue to try other converter programs, and will continue to update my findings here….

can you get facebook/myspace mobile and/or twitter on this for free like other phones?
Hi Amanda,
This phone does not support Facebook/Myspace/Twitter. The web browser cannot browse these places, and I’m 99% this phone doesn’t support apps.
Even if I’m wrong, it would not be free.
Actually, I have this phone and I do get facebook and Twitter on it. It comes as text messages.
Bill,
Yes, you can sign up for text alerts from companies, but that isn’t an app.
So yes, you could get updates via texts, but no other interface.
I currently have a motoroal w370, pretty basic phone……..sounds like from your review of this phone, it connects easily to a computer and transfers files either via bluetooth or cable. All good, but a couple of questions please:
Can you transfer your email contacts [from outlook] into the directory?
You have mentioned email……..does this mean you can recieve and or send email form this phone? [sorry for the possibly stupid question, I haven't tried the browser service yet, so kind of confused about how that all works........] Sounded like you are limited to net10′s “special” network, and nothing else, so I don’t quite get how you can send email, and if you can seems there ougth to be a way to receive it…..? And is there no way [hack?] to conncet to other internet addresses?
Hi Jeff,
I think when he mentioned email, he meant sending an MMS to an email address (which is possible with SMS/MMS). I do not believe this phone supports IM or email; but when I get this phone, I will confirm.
As for the browser, it is not a full browser and cannot browse the normal WWW.
Finally, I do not think you can transfer contacts (vCard, outlook etc) to the phone, but I will again confirm this when I get it.
I just got this phone. It does not support transferring contacts or IM or email.
I have this phone and sent an email to another person from it. I can access the web but only certain parts of it. I have accessed yahoo (checked my email and sent email), webkinz, and some other sites. It is not free though it costs normal cell phone minutes. It does not support facebook.
i have a few questions. Are the keys rubber or hard plastic? What kind of accessories does this phone offer?(aim, mobile internet, Ez tip calculator, world clock,) I have the env2 from verizon wireless but net10 is a lot cheeper, would you suggest that this phone is better than the env2?
Hi Bob,
Review Part 3 has the info on the extras. I’m expecting to get this phone tomorrow, and I will answer your question about the keys.
The Buttons are rubber both the number pad and QWERTY Keyboard. The only plastic keys on it is the D-pad, side camera button and volume buttons.
I have a couple of questions about the T401G.
Can you move the Text Memos from the Memo Pad to the SD Card, or any other way to move these memos to a PC other than sending a text message.
Can you use the phone as a PDA, by not activating it, by pass activation?
I just left verizon and my LG ENV3 behind to save a bundle on monthly fees. I could be spoiled but in my opinion after my ENV for several years, I am greatly disappointed!! This phone is not even nearly as capable as the ENV or even other motorola or samsung models I have had in the last 10 yrs. NOT USER FRIENDLY!! You have to push soo many buttons just to delete a pic or text. I hate this phone. For a childs first phone..fine. For an avid texter or business caller, I say stay away!!
Has anyone figured out how to load java games and apps on to this phone yet? (I’m posting again because I forgot to check the “notify” for followup comments.)

I just got my t401g, however, I am having one problem.
As I am using this phone as my main camera, I bought a 4GB MicroSDHC card for the phone. The link to Newegg is at the bottom. When I got the card, I inserted it into the t401g and it recognized the card. Just to make sure it would work fine, I formatted the card from the phone (it created some folders on the card.)
When I started using the camera, I assumed it would automatically use the card instead of the small internal memory. I was wrong. As I take pictures and videos, the phone stores them like before in the internal memory, not the card. There is an option to move/copy the pictures to the card, and this works fine, but it’s really annoying.
As for my troubleshooting, I put it in my computer and tested it (worked fine), reformatted it again in the phone, and then reset my phone’s settings. The only thing I have not done is a full reset of the phone (I would rather not lose my contacts, pics, etc. I’ll do it if I have to.)
The t401g DOES see the card and it does support MicroSDHC. It works perfectly, except it isn’t the default save location. I have looked everywhere in the settings, but can’t find anything.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance to all.

When do you expect this phone to be available for tracfone? I have been looking at this phone on net10 and it’s WAY more expensive than some of tracfone’s deals. Thanks!
it’s on net10′s website zip code 60411
i really want tracfone to get this phone i have 2,000 minutes and don’t want to loose them by switching to net10
You can transfer minutes between Net10 and Tracfone. You just have to call the service line. If one company says you can’t, call the other one. Net10 and Tracfone are owned my the same company and the minutes are interchangeable and CAN BE transferred, no matter what they say.
Ethan, have you done this yourself? If so, did you go trac to net10, or the other direction? Which phone models? Thanks for sharing, this is big news.
I just wasted 58 minutes of my time today and another 34 minutes yesterday to find out that they cannot transfer minutes from my old Tracfone to my new Samsung T401g Net10 phone. They gave me a 1800 number for the corporate offices to call M – F, 8am – 7PM…who they say still won’t be able to help me!!! ARRGGGG…can you please tell me how you got this company to trasnfer the minutes from tracfone to net10?? Who do I call? thanks!
Theresa, I have to reiterate here that I’ve never heard anyone besides Ethan claim that minutes could be transferred between these two brands.
You can find it at Sears for $79.99 in Norman, OK.
I purchased this phone but once I found out I couldn’t use the web browser (other than the VERY limited amount that Net10 give you), I took it back and got a refund. BUT I really liked this phone and am wondering if anyone has been able to unlock it? I would like to use it with my ATT account so I can check my email on it. Has anyone been able to get email to work in some fashion or another?
How fast is the browser on the T401g, as compared to the Motorola w376g from Tracfone.
What Games does this phone have???? And does the web work? I saw a you tube video of a kid using it but Ive heard that it doesn’t work what is the truth????
Also Does the internet eat up your net10 minutes???
The internet uses the same amount of minutes as a regular call – 1.00 units per minute. Games it comes with are Sudoku and JumpBoy (RocketMan) but you can download more for roughly 50 minutes. Hope that helps
the internet does not work
Hmm, strange comment as it works well on mine. Could you please elaborate on this comment?
FYI to all on the fence about this phone due to price…I had planned on going to Best Buy early this morning (Black Friday) and braving the crowds to get this phone as they had it advertised for $39.99 which is a $40 savings. But I decided to check the website (Best Buy’s) and sure enough, I was able to order it online for only an additional $5.50 in shipping. Well worth not having to get up at 3am and fight the Black Friday crowds. Can’t wait to get this phone. Good luck!
P.S. For those asking when Tracfone is going to carry this, I don’t believe they have any plans to. The same parent company owns both Tracfone and Net10 and I’ve heard rumors that they may merge at some point. That said, you can, in fact transfer both your existing phone number AND minutes from your Tracfone over to your new Net10 phone. You will probably spend a good deal of time finding a CS rep that can do this for you because as with Tracfone, Net10′s CS department is outsourced to other countries and their CS training is spotty at best. I would do as Pbushx2 suggests and call their executive resolution line if you can’t get someone to help with the switch.

Hi nice review
I got this phone on black friday at bestbuy but
found out that the right side soft button is set to BROWSER and as soon as you hit it . . . it launches the browser and deducts ONE minute . . and then another minute each min you dont exit the Browser. . . . its silly to have Browser button
in a spot so easy to hit . . .which will suck all mins from phone while in your pocket.
Exactly, the browser button is soo pointless, and just uses up my minutes. But, once u get used to it, the problem sorta goes away.
Buena suerte!
I am trying to access my email… is this possible with the T401G?
I have tried the following….
1 – Place ‘Email’ as a ‘Favorite. The URL entered is: http://www.gmail.com
2 – MENU-Browser-Favorites-Email-Open
3 – I receive message: ‘HTTP Errpr: 403 Forbidden’
Am I doing something wrong? Please advise.
Thank you.
Net10 locks web browsing off. The phone itself could do it, but Net10 only allows the browser to go to their sites (to get ringtones, pics, etc). Sorry, it is not possible to do email (or any other type of browsing) on the t410g unless you use texts somehow as the medium.
that’s not true, I have a Net10 Samsung T401G I recently bought the bonus pack from walmart, mine happens to have an AT&T sim…I can, myspace, google, facebook, my windows live account, and my hotmail account, like butter my friend!
–C. Rocket
what I have found is that this phone will only allow access to “mobile” sites outside the Net10 Network. For example, if you want to go to gmail, instead of the normal URL, use m.gmail.com
facebook is also m.facebook.com
I’m finding there aren’t a variety of accessories available for the T401g yet. Does anyone know if the samsung gravity or gravity 2 accessories, such as screen covers, phone cases, etc. are compatible with the T401g?
When i bought this phone at wal-mart it came with a bonus pack with the case, headset, and car charger.
I’m finding there aren’t a variety of accessories available for the T401G yet. Whenever you touch it your fingerprints get all over the phone. I want to know if they are going to start producing covers for the T401G to prevent this.
It is currently available at bestbuy.com for $60.
I have been able to get my email to work with this phone. Here’s how I did it… Send a text message to your own email address. The return address will be nnnnnnnnnn@txt.att.net where nnnnnnnnnn is your phone number. Now in your e-mail client, set it to forward all your email to that address. DONE!!!
Remember that Net10 charges 5 cents (or 3 with this phone) for every 160 characters. This means that an e-mail of a few paragraphs will cost Bookoo-bucks.
Would the case/accessories for the Samsung R451c work for the Samsung t401g?
Saw this phone in walmart. they seem to be having a bonus pack sale for it
i wonder if this phone have a cheaper price?
I see that there’s a memo book feature, and would like to know how large a memo it will let you create (number of characters in a single memo)?
This sounds like it might be very useful to me for keeping certain kinds of lists stored on my phone, but only if a memo isn’t restricted to being very short.
Thanks.
Hi Stephen,
I own a t401g and the max length for a note is 1000 characters. Taking an average of 5 letters per word plus punctuation and spaces, I would estimate it would hold about 150-200 words per note.
I definitely recommend the t410g. It is my first cell phone, and the price of service can’t be beat.

I bought this phone. Paid for the adapter. Bought the 16Gig chip. Installed the Samsung PC software. Nothing. I called tech support and they told me I will not be able to transfer my mp3 files from my PC using USB.
I threw the phone against the wall.
I will NEVER buy a TracFone again!

ShaneB, I’m not sure what went wrong in your case, but It’s definitely possible to add mp3 files by USB. I transferred an entire CD worth of music to my card using the USB drive. MAke sure the USB setting is set to “Mass Storage” rather than “modem.” Another option would be to remove the SD card from the phone and add music files directly to the SD Card. No need to throw the phone against the wall. Have you read my review? If so, you’ll know that it’s possible to add mp3′s to the phone.
I called Net10′s support and spoke to “Kevin” and later to his supervisor “Stefy” and they told me in so many words that their manual for this phone is wrong when it says you can use the USB adapter that Radio Shack sold me and that I needed an SD/USB adapter. When I inquired as to just how to purchase one of these they replied…”oh at Walmart or somethin’. Well I said “Ok could you give me some details on this item so I know what to ask for?”. “Just tell em it’s an SD card adapter”. Again no information as to just which one I needed. I asked them if they could send me an email with the website or websites that would have this product. I was informed that they could not email out or give me the site information.
So it is off to Radio Shack to see what I can do next.
I will NEVER buy one of these again. The product support and the tech support is abysmal at best.
Shane
P.S. Nice to meet you and Merry Christmas!
Happy Holidays as well…

What games does it have on it?
It has a Sudoku game and one other, I can’t recall what it is. There is a link to download more, but it never works for me (and I bet they would be very expensive.) The t401g does use Java for its games though.
I purchased this phone at Walmart in a bundle package for $59.95 (not including tax), which contained the phone (duh), phone charge for both home and auto. It has two games: Sudoku and JumpBoy. However…
The screen does not switch when I select either game. Meaning, the screen display stays in the vertical or column and will not switch to horizontal or row display when I open the sliding keyboard and the game is already loaded. Note: this did work at one point…
If you know of a fix, please email me at garysiegle@yahoo.com
I’m pretty sure that those 2 games are in portrait only. That is how it is on mine anyway.
Cam,
Both my wife and I were able to play in landscape mode at one time, but it is not the case presently. Any ideas???
Hmmm, I just tried both games again. When I started the game while in portrait, the game was portrait. When I started the game in landscape mode, the first Java screen was in landscape, but then everything else reverted to portrait.
I really do not know why that would happen. I recently restored my phone to factory defaults to clear up a settings goof I made, so my phone is almost factory condition software-wise. Sorry I can’t help further, I have never seen the game inlandscape.

Can I put a new SIM card in it?
WIll it work, cause In Russia you need a different SIM card with the service there…
Samsung T401G
This phone should work if you put a new sim in. Remember that it is a GSM phone that works on certain frequencies. Check your local specs and the phone’s specs.
I don’t know this for sure, but it is my educated guess.
Serge, this phone is locked to your provider (NET10) and you will need an unlock code if the new SIM card is for a different service provider.
I think you can unlock the phone in the SIM Settings, but idk this for sure as I avoid that menu setting like the plague.
Does this phone have JAVA?
This phone does support java for small games, but I’m not sure besides that.
hey pbushx2 i’m a big fan of your reviews and website. i’m curious to know if there is a way to fix my t401 text message from 5 cents to 3 cents. preferably without customer service cause i asked them multiple times and they claimed the 3cents on the t401 box was some mistake. thank you and if i have to go through customer service again can you give me some ways to explain it to them because most of them acted like they never heard of the 3 cent text. don’t get me wrong i love tracfone/net10 but not the customer service.
Unfortunately, the only way to fix the problem is through customer service. My phone worked correctly out of the box, but I know many haven’t been so lucky.

Hi, do you know how to get in the phone files? When I hook it up to the pc it shows the folders of the memory card but not the phone files, I would like to put my own ringtones on it.
Hello,
Adding ringtones to the t401g is confusing, but here is how it works.
First off, the ringtones need to be .mp3 files under 300k. Try to make them 20-30secs long.
When hooking up the t401g to your computer via USB, you will only see the memory card. There is NO way to view the phone’s memory with the computer. To add ringtones, add the mp3 file(s) to the Music folder on your memory card. Then, from the phone, select move (or copy) to phone. Then, the files will show up under the sound settings as ringtones.
For others, note that you cannot copy files to/from the phone without a memory card, even if you use a USB cable. The phone will only enter disk mode with one insterted, and it will then only show the card.
~Cameron
Cameron,
Thanks got it to work. Y can’t you view the phone’s memory with the computer?
Hanco9k
It is just the way that the phone is built. The phone’s memory is off limits.
I personally bought a 4GB MicroSDHC card and then a $3 cable off of Amazon. Works perfectly.
Thanks Cameron, I’ve been playing with mine all weekend. Got it to work!
You can access the internal memory via Bluetooth because I’ve done it.
How? What software did you use? Could you save texts?
Thanks
Is this an unlocked phone? I have TMobile service. If I buy it and insert the sim card, will it work?
It is a locked phone, but there is a SIM unlock command in the settings. I have never used it, but I do know that using it will break Net10 compatibility. I think this is what you are looking for.
A lot of people have asked about email on the t401g. Email is not supported from the Tracfone/Net10 browser in all my experience.
However, there is a way to send your email to the phone as texts. Note, this isn’t interactive and is read only, but still is nice. Also note, this method forwards the entire message. A txt is only 140 characters. I don’t know this for sure, but I guess it would cost .3 minutes per 140 characters in the email, which could add up.
Anyway, here is the method:
First, you need to know if you have an ATT&T or TMobile SIM card in your T410g. Don’t know? Find out here: http://bit.ly/xtfxy
Next, go into your email and set up a forwarding email address. (I use Gmail, but you can do this with almost any email client/webmail.) Make a rule/setting to forward all (or some) of your email to the following email address:
AT&T: [10-digit phone number]@txt.att.net
TMobile: [10-digit phone number]@tmomail.net
Now, your email will forward to that email address, which automatically converts into a text.
If you have any questions/problems, just reply here. Enjoy!
~Cameron
That’s some pretty useful info, I can access my WIndows Live account, and Hotmail Account through my Net10 Samsung T401G…You just have to see if your web based E-mail supports your Phone…Mine happens to have an AT&T Sim. Myspace, Facebook, and Google all work, even the shopping tab for google works, which can be very useful on the go, however, Google maps doesn’t have a mobile version, and m.mapquest.com does not work.

I got this phone for my son and he is happy with it. We have not been able to download mp3 files to it though. We have the microSD card and also the USB cable, but when we connect to the computer it doesn’t recognize the phone. Is there a driver somewhere where we have to download it to the computer. I expected to plug it in and start transferring files, but that didn’t work. Help!
If you are using a modern operating system (Windows 98+), you don’t need any drivers. Make sure the phone is set to Mass Storage mode, the default is Modem mode which is worthless for Net10 phones. Change it by going to:
Settings > Phone Settings > 7. USB Mode > Mass Storage
If that doesn’t work, just let me know.
We are also wondering how to donload mp3 music on this phone. We have the Microsd card and USB. How do we do this????
Hi Jacob, try what I just wrote for anita. See if that works for you!
Also what websites can we use??

Tell me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can use any website with a mobile version, which means a version of the site optimized for browsing on small screens.
Anyone know what the voice memo capacity of this phone is? I just want to use it as a phone and camera for emergency snapshots but would really appreciate if it could store multiple voice memos that I would make for myself…everything from remember to buy bread and milk to a street address for something I saw and didn’t want to forget. Is it a good tool as a voice recorder?
Hi Marty,
The t410g has a voice record function which records a voice memo. While recording, it can pause/resume as well as stop & save.
After recording the memo, it is stored on the phone and can be moved/copied to the memory card. You can view/listen to the memos in a menu, you can rename the files, you can delete of course, and you can set a voice memo as a ringtone or an alarm tone (what goes off to an alarm.)
In my limited use of the feature, I’m pretty impressed. The ability to manage the voice memos like files (move, copy, rename, etc) is pretty nice.

Cameron,
I got the phone and so far it is great. I was hesitant to buy it because of negative reviews I read about the Net10 service. My experience so far has been as promised. No complaints from me. Now I have a really silly question. The phone comes with a clear film over the display and keyboard that is obviously meant to be removed. However there is small oval clear plastic piece over the camera lens. Is that to be removed too or is it some sort of permanent protection that you shoot pictures through? It doesn’t seem to be as easily removed (no tab)so I don’t want to pry it off if it is meant to stay on there.
Hi Marty, I’m glad you like it.
I must say I don’t remember that film you are referring to, but I know mine does not have it. The camera and the little “mirror” are protected by a hard, clear plastic. It is also the location of the speaker.
I would say remove it; I must have when I got mine.
~Cameron
That’s what I’m referring to Cameron, the oval piece of plastic over the lens and mirror..leave it on or pry it off??? Thanks for all your help.
I would take the film off, the camera probably will be blurry with it on. My phone doesn’t have it, and there is a hard piece of solid plastic behind it.

this phone sounds really cool. Anyone know if it will come out on tracfone anytime soon?
At this point, it seems rather doubtful. I have to believe that if it were going to be a TracFone model, it would have been released around the same time as the Net10 version, or at least within a few weeks.
Well I just ordered this phone from Net10 and I used all the codes so the price with shipping and accessories the total came to $71.99. Thanks for the codes…but mostly THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS helping us out with codes and how to’s!! You don’t even know how much you have helped me out with my phones…and I DO appreciate all your hard work!!! Cuz I tried to find info for myself and got lost in “webland” LOL! Thanks again and Have a great New Year!!
Roxy
Thanks for the kind words, Roxy. I’m very happy to hear that I’ve helped you out. Happy New Year to you, too!

Walmart has the Bonus Pack for $60, which is what I payed for the non bonus pack. Get it while you can, I have no idea how long it will last.
For those of you asking about the T401G picture and video quality I recently uploaded a video if you would like to check it out including 2 minutes of video and roughly 20 pictures.
I have the data transfer cable and downloaded the samsung PC studio, but the software says that my t401g phone does not support it, why?
Also, can you give me step by step instructions on how to transfer mp3 downloads to the t401g phone using the data cable and computer, and what website can I use to download free mp3 songs?
ok, uninstall the Samsung software, you DO NOT need it. If you do not have a MicroSD card in the phone, the USB cable is worthless. In order to transfer files to the t401g, you need a memory card. The USB cable will simply allow the computer to see the memory card; the cable cannot connect to the phone’s memory.
First I like to say thank you for responding to my question. You really know your stuff, and I truly appriciate the help.
BTW, did you know that online walmart is selling the t401g phone in a bundle which includes the car charger, phone case, and hands free headset for $59.94. Plus if you have it shipped to store site its free S/H. Check it out.

Hi
May i please have step by step instructions on how to download music onto this phone. I have the micro sd card in the phone, and the cable. I had the song dowloaded on my computer. Now, how to I get it to my phone?????
Hi Jacob,
If you have the card and the cable, the first thing I would do is format the card (it helps). On the phone, go to Menu > My Folder > Memory Card > Options > Memory Card Info > Format > Yes.
This will erase the card, but also create premade folders that aid adding music. Now, make sure the phone is on the correct mode (it isn’t by default.) Go to on the phone: Menu > Settings > Phone Settings > USB Mode > Mass Storage.
Now, simply connect the phone to the computer. Remember, you DON’T need any special software, Windows/OS X does everything. The phone should show up as a drive under Windows Explorer or Finder, so copy your music files to the newly created Music folder on the card. Simple as that! Remember, if you want to set an mp3 as a ringtone, it needs to be under 300K and mp3 format.
If you have any problems/questions, fire away.

My son has this phone and has been able to download his mp3 and photos to the memory card. Only problem, he has downloaded a few videos to the card. They appear but he cannot play them. Is there a certain format (mov avi mp4) or does he need to do something else.
Hopefully this will help:

I think they need to be in the same format that the phone records in. It’s 3gpp format, with a 3gp file extension.
I was just wondering if there is a way to lock the browser button so it asks for a password before the browser launches if i accidentally hit the button. I remember i did it on my old net10 phone but cannot seem to figure it out on this one. Any help is very much appreciated.
Hi Brandon,
If there is one thing I wish this phone could do, it would be some way to lock the browser. Unfortunately, there is no way to reassign the button or in and other way mess with the browser. However, you do have about 2 secs to press END and not be charged.

I`m sorry, i didn’t understand your answer, in my phone appears IMEI code of 4 numbers, but then it says that it needs an unlock code of 8 numbers cause the IMEI doesn’t work
…mm so don’t you have any code of 8 numbers to unlock it?..cause i just have 9 chances to get it unlocked. If you can do something please help me. Thank u
ohh..the IMEI code is 4203
Hola Jonatan, queria saber si ya habias podido desbloquear el telefono.
i have vista SP2 dell laptop, T401G and the data cable.Whenever I connect the data cable – it simply charges the phone. The phone says USB is in use – but the computer does not seem to recognize the phone and does not show it as a drive. Add New Hardwarealso does not find the phone.Samsung PC Studio 3.2.1HB6 version also does not recognize the phone.
Any help to connect T-401G to a vista laptop would be appreciated.
Two things – first, I think it might work only to view the memory card within your phone. Do you have one? If not, their quite cheap (around $10 for a 4gb, or around $6-$8 for 2GB), so you might want to look into one. (Like this one on Amazon.)
Check the settings menu – go to menu>settings>phone settings>USB Mode. Make sure it’s set to “mass storage.”
I was wondering how the browser worked. My friend got this phone and I fell in love with it at first sight but I was wondering if I could see facebook at all, even if I can only check my homepage.
Thank you!
You can view facebook’s mobile version, which shows a lot of the status updates and messages, but not nearly as many pictures as the regular site. It’s not a great browsing experience, but it works.
I was looking at this phone on walmart’s website, but it says it will not work for my zip code although Net10′s website says it will. Would there be some reason for this or is one of the websites just wrong? Thanks in advance.
Probably one of the websites is wrong. this phone works on the same network as AT&T and T-Mobile, so if you have good coverage from one of those in your area, the T401g will work for you.
I recently purchased my Net10 Samsung T401G in early december. I was kicking myself in the head when I came here and saw the black friday deal at Bestbuy…I have been with Net10 for a couple years now, and at their price, it would have realistically made the phone free to me, haha, ohh well. So then I keep looking around on this blog to find all the codes to order online to save money that way, but then when I went to my Local Wal Mart, they had it their with a free accessory pack for only $60. I have a brand new macbook, and I know a lot of people put down the Net10 service because of limited browsing/internet options…but I’m not too concerned with that, however, I will say, having a Bluetooth enabled Mac has made this phone a dream, flawless and quick delivery of anything on the phone, right to my laptop, no wires, memory cards, or troublesome drivers involved. Reading the previous post, someone is saying they can view facebook on the phone? I haven’t tried that or Myspace yet because the network is usually slow for browsing, and will not load normal internet sites like a service plan phone would, I.E. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint….anyways, now that I know someone has actually been able to access it, I will take the risk of loosing a few minutes.., 5 out 5 stars in my book…Take care.
So you have bluetooth and you don’t need a memory card? I have bluetooth on my computer as well, and I have been thinking about getting a memory card…should I still get one or not?
Hi Jaclyn,
C. Rocket might have more to say about this, but in my experience a memory card is helpful to have. For just a few bucks, you can get a 1 or 2 gb card that will hold extra photos, video, or even some mp3 files.
To: Jaclyn…
My macbook is Bluetooth enabled, the Samsung Net10 T401g is Bluetooth enabled as well, it takes a bit of configuring between those devices to get them to communicate, start sharing data (mp3s, videos, pictures, ringtones, etc.), but Apple makes Bluetooth functionality and visibility rather simple and easy, and the T401g can see the Macbook, and vice versa when both devices bluetooth is turned on. I wasn’t implying that you don’t need a memory card, however, my T401g did not come with one in the package deal, so a friend sold me a 1 Gb Micro SD card about a year and a half after I had bought the phone. I love the memory card feature, and it is fairly fast for SD memory speeds, the bluetooth is by far the more dominant transfer method concerning transfer speeds between devices, and for the file extensions supported by this phone, the memory capacity depending on what memory card you get, it is vastly expandable. Is your bluetooth on your computer getting along and seeing your T401g? And vice versa as well? In all honesty, I went without the memory card in my phone for 1 1/2 years, then got around to getting one, so I will support the fact that although you don’t need the memory card for a lot of transfer solutions, as long as you have a bluetooth enabled computer, you can get by without a memory card if it is not a priority, but some methods of moving files within the phone cannot be completed without the use of an external micro SD memory card, between 1-16 Gb I’ve heard should work just fine. I will also support the fact that if you can throw down on a memory card for this phone, it will make your experience far more satisfying and beneficial. It all depends on what is important to you… If you do go with a Micro SD though, you should get ahold of a very useful software program for your computer called “Mobile Media Converter.” It has been one of the only software programs out there that will convert your vids and music into different formats that the T401g will recognize, meaning you can reformat vids on your computer, of most any type, to go right on your T401g and play on the phone. That subject gets a little tricky, maybe another time if people are still having issues with getting the videos to work on the phone. Anyways, Congratulations on your purchase, I love my T401g and it is still working perfectly, even after almost 3 years of abuse.
I apologize for the delay of my reply, it’s been a while since I’ve checked back here to read up on all of your experiences with the T401g.
I provided a few comments throughout this thread and a couple others on “pbushx2′s” nifty phone reviewing forum here. It is safe for me to say at this point, I’ve owned the phone now (I got the walmart pack for $59.99) since it’s initial inception with Net10′s service. I am happy to report I still own the phone, it is still my main ride, after dropping it countless times, tossing it occasionally, sliding it down tables as well, it continues to prove to me a reliable and effective cell phone for most any user, including the younger Lady GaGa generation of tweeters and touch screeners, who initially were quick to spite the features of this cell, compared to their newer, tech-savvy, top of the line smart phone gadgets. Ok, so it’s no Ev0, and it’s not a Droid, and last for best, it is not an iPhone, however, I am still very surprised at how flawlessly this phone transfers data Via Bluetooth to my Macbook, being that it’s not an apple product, and doesn’t really claim a lot of compatibility. I’ve read some posts, sounds like a few of you connecting the T401g to PC’s and PC Laptops are having quite a difficult time, and I feel for you, because everything about the phone is neat, and that would be a main reason to buy this particular model for a lot of people is the bluetooth technology, on a mid-priced qwerty phone, although it does not have the ability to handle iPhone, Ev0, Droid, and other current smart phone apps, there is a directory in the menu on the T401g that does actually have apps, and you can even download custom ones and throw them on your phone from sites like Umnet.com. No, they don’t all work, a lot are third party, and mainly supported by an earlier Java Applet then the more current smart phones on the market, but there are options, possibilities I tell you! I am a big fan of the Microsoft strategy PC game series, Age of Empires, and I was able to download the game on Umnet, specifically for the T401g, and it works with sound, you can save your games, all rudimentary features of the apps that come on the newer smart phones, just not the newest stuff.
My hat goes off to you pbushx2! Keep up the great work!
P.S. Have you any info on the newest T404?? I just caught that today on Net10′s site.
Thanks for the redirect…
C. Rocket
I converted an avi into 3gpp and the phone won’t play it. Has anyone had any luck? Any suggestions would be apprecitated.
I heard u have to unlock the phone with a code, what is the code unlocking
some websites don’t work on the phone, what websites do work
i just bought 2 samsungs t401g from net10 these are great phones but both phones are 2 minutes behind on the time called net10 no answer can not manully set time when i turn phone on it said updating time still is two minutes slow
First off, great site! Many helpful people here. I need help with something that is bothering me very much. I had this phone for about 3 hours now, and ran thru every setting/menu/etc a few times, and got it all set the way I wanted. Now, I SET A COLOR THEME IN THE BEGINNING AND CANNOT CHANGE IT BACK. I guess you can call it the “highlight bar” , when you are scrolling your contacts or messages etc, to show you which contact or message you are currently on. I set it to “pumpkin” and CANNOT find the setting again. I even reset the phone and restored (where it erases all data too) and everything goes back to default except the pumpkin color. Is this a one time setting?! If so I would think it can be undone after a phone reset. Any help?
JayCustom – I couldn’t figure this out either! Weird. Mine is also set to “pumpkin.” I don’t remember setting it to that, but it has been a few months since I got mine.
I don’t think you can change it. All you can do is set it to either Black or White which changes the background Colour.
I HAVENT GOT MINE YET BUT I HEARD IT HAS 3CENTS PER TEXT MESSAGE AND ITS THE ONLY NET10 PHONE THAT HAS IT SOOO IF YOU ARE A TEXTATTIC THEN YOU CAN GET THE SAMSUNG T401G SENCE IT HAS A SPECIAL TEXT MESSAGEING RATE. AND A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT HAS BEEN SAYING THAT IT IS A GIRL PHONE ITS NOT IT IS A BOY PHONE SOOO YOU CAN TELL EVERYBOD ELSE THAT ITS A BOY PHONE.
ok… I need help. The box and website advertise text messaging as a .3 units rate, whereas my device deducts .5 units/message, the normal NET10 Rate. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.
Joel, you have met the downside to Net10, customer support. The only way to fix it is to call Net10. I’m sorry.
I just called in, its fixed now. IF ANYONE WANTS TO SKIP THAT CALL TO CUSTOMER SERVICE, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:

OK, I just had to share this info. Since I purchased my Net10 Samsung T401g about six weeks ago I have been trying to figure out how to get free Ringtones, Games, Java Apps, etc. on the phone and today I came across the following info:
http://www.howardforums.com/printthread.php?t=1608093
It really works, I have already downloaded and installed a couple of games, a wallpaper, and even an App that all loaded and work just fine. Try it out and let me know if it worked for you as well.
Enjoy … MosesX
I bought my first net10 t401g in dec.2009 as a minute-phone and now i’m on my second thru net10 unlimited…I have been testing it’s features relentlessy for 2+ months downloading (mainly apps) from sites like umnet.com – sharejar.com -download.cnet – getjar.com pdawareseeker.-com mobilesites24 and many others. I have successfully downloaded more than 50+ apps( one’s I thought worth the effort) with an error ratio of about 20 percent…”malfunction”)….those claiming that app & game downloading is impossible are.. politely put…incorrect! Those interested in apps, try aforementioned sites, I found a few gems…I digress, I really wanted to post some spec.s for the interested information gathered in process…… Samsung SGH-T401G-.microedition platform with proprietary net10 unlimited system design (encoding) ISO-8859 Java Extention-(config)CLDC-1.1/MIDP-2.0 MIDP 1.0-(profile)en_US(locale)-1.0(pim version)-0,1(commports)-1.0(jtwi.version)1.0(io.file.FileConnection.version)-Wireless Messaging API (JSR-120)-Mobile Media API (JSR-135)-media.version 1.1-null (location.version)- null (messaging.SMS.SMSC)-false (mixing)-false (audio.capture)- false (video.capture)- false (supports.recording)-null (audio.encodings)- null (video.encodings)-null (video.snapshot.encodings)-null streamable.contents)- null (hostname)-TOTAL.MEM=11264000 bytes..supported content types…(audio)=midi/x-tone-seq/mpeg/mp3/3gpp/amr/aac/m4a/x-ms-wma…(video)+3gp/3gpp/mp4…(application)=sdp…Hope this answeres a few questions about setup/capability…will update soon
those claiming that app & game downloading is impossible are.. politely put…incorrect!
If this is true then why can’t I go to these sites?
I get a 403 forbidden error.
Exactly how character per character dot per dot do you type in the address? Do you leave the http//: part do you add www before the address or do you put a m. before the address?
I’ve tried umnet.com and getjar.com and don’t want to waste any more minutes trying the other sites.
The only non net10 site I was able to go to was facebook but have no desire to return there because there is nothing of value there no games or apps.
I guess I’m with Dallas on this one – I can’t make it work either, but I’m all ears if someone can point out something that I’m doing wrong.
It’s also worth noting that in the past, we’ve heard reports of certain people being able to surf to any website at all on their w376g, while most of us were limited to the TracFone web at the time. So it’s not unheard of that there might be varying capabilities even among different handsets of the same model.
For umnet, instead of typing http://www.umnet.com I type m.umnet.com. I also find it much easier to find the app or game I want using my computer. Each one comes with a “Download ID”. When you get m.umnet.com you can just enter that ID to download what you want. It’ll save you from having to search the site on your phone.
can someone tell me how to receive/retrieve pictures and multi media sent to me on this phone? I can send pictures, etc. alright but whenever someone sends me stuff, I get charged for opening it, but nothing is there?
rjay – it’s been a while since I’ve tried this, but it seems to me that if you open the MMS message, there is some sort of “options” menu that appears near the bottom of the screen. Does this work? Could also be that i’m thinkign of a different model.
Joel gave me the motivation to call Net10 again after a failed attempt to fix the texting deduction issue. For anyone who isn’t getting deducted correctly, call the Customer Service and hit 5 for technical support. I tried feature support (whatever 4 is) and got nowhere.
I told the rep. about the problem. He tried to tell me after a code input it was right. I told him it wasn’t, citing the packaging and the website. He put me on hold and checked with a supervisor. He came back with five codes, and voila! Got my deduction fixed.
So, as big of a pain as their customer service, they can fix it. Don’t let them tell you otherwise, but don’t be rude to them either (they didn’t do it, it’s a technical error). Good luck to anyone who is having this issue.
Thanks for the update, John. Glad to hear you got it worked out.
hello now i will get this phone cuz i am in need of a new phone.
Have had this phone since December. My old Net10 Moto w375g worked great all the time. Now, however I am unable to use this phone at work, for example. The phone only works for calls, texts and web when a “G” icon is present near the signal strength indicator. I may have full signal bars, but unless the “G” is there, I can do nothing with this phone. Net10′s customer service has been horrible. They told me that the “G” has no bearing on simple texts and calls, yet unless it’s there, the phone fails to send texts or displays “Emergency Calls Only” when I try to make a call. HELP!!!
Stevie D -
That stinks. I suspect the difference may be related to a change in the type of SIM card in your phone. It sounds like you may have previously had an AT&T SIM in your old phone, and now have a T-Mobile SIM. Try reading these two previous posts to see if they help diagnose the problem:
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/19/tracfone-and-net10-sim-card-info/
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/21/more-tracfone-and-net10-sim-card-info/
If the SIM card types are the same, then the most likely explanation is that the t401 simply has poorer signal reception.
If it’s not one of those two, there’s also some possibility that there’s been a change in the external environment near your work – such as a new building going up that disrupts the signal, or a change in the nearby cell towers.
I had read the SIM posts several weeks ago and asked Net10 to send me an AT&T SIM card, and when it arrived, you guessed it, it was a T-Mobile card. When I called again to complain, they instructed me to call them from the location where I was experiencing the problem so they can run a check on the phone. Problem is, I’m at work while they’re closed, and how are they going to diagnose a phone with no signal? So, I exchanged the phone for another T401g and the clerk transferred my minutes, etc. to the new one. That was Sunday and I’m still unable to use the phone (AT ALL). I don’t know if this is an activation problem or what, but after 2 more hours on the phone, I kinda lost my temper and just told them to make it right and call me when you’re done. However, I did discover a way to access a “secret” GPRS menu that may end up solving my problem. From the main screen, dial *#4777*8665# (will appear on the screen like this: *#4777*—–). If my service ever gets going, I’m gonna toy with these settings to see they help fix my problem. Thanks again for a great site.

If only someone could find a “secret code” to allow access to the area of the phone that allows storage and running of JAR apps (SYS folder?)we would all be good to go and very happy campers.
right now u can get it at walmart for 60$ in a bundle with a car charger, a case, nand 300 free minutes. Avalable in the store and online
I have a 4GB sandisk micro sd card how do I put the music on it and have it play on the phone. I keep dragging and dropping onto the card and trying to play it in the phone but it doesn’t work. It doesn’t work it alot of my pictures i tryed to put on the phone either. What am I doing wrong.
How do you change the ringtone of the text to a song/or ringtone that you want.
How do you change the text tone to a ringtone???
For text tones, you need to select from one of the four default options. Sucky, I know, but that’s the way it is on the t401g.
i love the website but why can’t i download any games from net10 on this phone.
Hi n10t40 –
I was just able to download a game through the phone’s browser. You might want to try that.
Second question/supplication. Does anyone know where I can buy a “splitter” for the T401g? I am not referring to the one that plugs into the car lighter but the one that attaches to the phone. This would enable you to plug a headset in and something else.
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks
Shane
Hi Shane
I’m not personally aware of any splitter like you describe, but I can tell you that the charging/headphone/usb port on the t401g is compatible with a lot of other SAmsung phones, such as the Jack and Blackjack. So if you can find a splitter to fit those phones, it should work on the t401g.
great info here. had to go through customer service to get the rate changed from 5 cent to 3 cent for texts. it was a chore but got it done, only now, my text messages don’t tell me who they are from until AFTER I open it. Kind of annoying since I wouldn’t open a letter from somebody I don’t know…any ideas?
Scott, did your phone previously (before the rate change) tell you who had sent the messages before you opened them?
I have had this phone since December 09 and I am pleased with it for the most part. The problem I have with it is sometimes I am downloading music to my phone and it shows up while the phone is plugged to my computer, but once I disconnect from my computer the songs disappear or they will be there and won’t play. Any suggestions? I’ve looked into if there are different endings (i.e. .mp3 .wam etc.) HELP!! If I can’t fix this problem I may have to invest in a mp3 player which defeats my reasons for getting this phone. Also, some of the music I am downloading is from freeware or shareware sites. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.
I have this phone and I like it. I am having a problem with it though. I download some songs and the songs will show up while the computer is connected to the computer. When I disconnect to llisten to the songs, they will disappear or they won’t play. Help me with this I would hate to have to buy a mp3 player. Also not sure if it is related but I get most songs from shareware sites.
I bought a Sandisk Micro 2GB — I moved my MP3 Format music to the SD card via an adapter for my laptop. I can move 20 songs and I’ll see 5, 6, 7 or 8…no rhyme or reason as to why which ones show up. I clear the disk off, start again — seems like the disk chooses which songs it wants. How can I get more then a few? Am I doing something wrong?
I bought ringtones and cannot get those to load — I get error messages — I have spent several hours over the two weeks that we’ve had the phone talking to Net10 trying to get the ringtones issue taken care of….and 5 cent texting to 3 cent texting…that’s finally taken care of.

I have a Samsung T301 with Tracfone, it does not show the name or number on an incoming text messg. My old motorolla 376 did show who the text was from and I really liked that feature.. So does the T401 G show id on incoming text?
Such a great phone. I got myn from net 10 and im loving it because i text alot. Who needs a iphone when you can get one of these and save alot of money on prepaid. this is a great phone if your sick of contract carriers.
Does there happen to be an escalation department phone number for Net10? I purchased this phone in December and since then I have not been able to purchase ringtones from the Net10 site. I click on downloads, it asks me to put in my serial number and my phone number and then I get a message saying my account is not authorized and to please contact them. I have tried calling 3 times for a total of almost 2 1/2 hours and they just reactivate my ticket number and tell me to wait 72 hours. I know I can purchase the ringtones directly from the phone, but I don’t want to waste the minutes searching. Thanks so much.
Hi all,
Is it possible to set this phone so you have to enter a pin/password in order to unlock the phone to dial or use the web? I’d like to activate this feature if this phone has such a feature.
I was going to activate the pin feature, but nowhere does it state what the preset pin for this phone is. Also, the pin feature only works when turning on the phone, and not when the phone is on, but has just gone to sleep. and you want to make a call. I tried the last 4 digits of my phone number and 0000 and neither works.
Does the password feature work in this way? Anyone know what the preset password is for these phones?
I’m wondering if there is no pin/password preset and you just need to press OK with a blank pin/password field?
I only have one attempt at the pin and don’t want to be locked out of my phone.
Thanks for any help,
Mike
Mike,
I had the same question you had. I even called Samsung about it. There is no feature for the pin code to enter when the phone is asleep. The pin is only good when you actually turn the darn phone off. I know it’s silly because who would turn their phone off and on after making calls or text.
Have – Net10 Motorola v176 (old, flip broken, keys loose but functional).
Has 1800 minutes on it, but airtime up in about a week.
Just bought the bonus pack Samsung T401G at Walmart (includes car charger, case and headset for $59). It’s still in the box, unopened.
Any advice on best way to ensure this amount of minutes will transfer to the new phone without problems? There is no porting involved, is there?
The package says “phone cannot be activated unless scanned at register” – which was done – a bar code titled “activate”. This does not mean the phone is activated, does it?
I’d really like to just make sure my phone number and minutes get on the new phone w/o a hitch – but it seems there are numerous troubles in doing this and/or with CS.
Thanks for any help and advice! : )
Hi “uncertain”
I think that, given the high number of minutes on your phone, you should call customer service to make sure the transfer goes smoothly. I’d
recommend calling executive resolutions, which I pointed out in this old post: http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/30/tracphone-support/.
Before you do that, be sure to record the number of minutes on your phone, as well as the parameter 30 and parameter 00 values on your phone. To get the parameter values, go to code entry mode under the prepaid menu, then key in *#00 for param. 00, and *#30 for param. 30. Record the numbers you see on the screen for each parameter value. This will ensure that your minutes are not lost in the transfer.
i reall want this phone if you guys could tell where i can get a good deal for this phone please tell me
I just got the data cable to the T401G and I cannot get it to work. I changed the USB Settings to Mass Storage and it finally loaded the drivers on Windows 7 for it. However when I go into Windows Explorer and try to open it, it says I need to insert a disk. The phone has a 4GB MicroSD card that I have in it and it doesn’t do anything. The phone knows that it is there and I’ve saved a couple pictures onto it. So I tried to format the card… When I go to My Folder, Memory Card I push select and it says initializing and that’s it. Doesn’t give me any options and doesn’t do anything except initializing. Please help!!!
I figured it out, I had to restart my phone and it worked. Thanks though!
im getting this phone so if there is anything i need to know please do tell me
i will never get this phone i dont have the money and my parents will never let me get one because they see no point in texting i tried convincing them not even my perfect report card with all A+ got them to say yes so i will forget i even wanted this phone so this is the last time i will post but it wont even matter to u guys because to you im a sad stupid girl wanting attention
so be smart.. save your money.. and hide the thing! lol
Live a little Honor Student!
Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought I had read somewhere on here when researching the Samsung T401G phone that you could lock the brower so it would not access it if accidentially hit. Can someone please tell me how to do this, if it is possible? Thanks!
On Nov 13, 2009, @ 3:46 pm, Cameron asked a question on how to make the memory card the default storage location on the phone. I’ve read through most of the comments here, but no one has answered him. I would like to know how to do this as well.
I also cannot find how to move music from the phone’s memory to the memory card. Could someone help me with this or point me to where the instructions may be located on the web?
Aside from these two problems, I love this phone!
Have a great Saturday, everyone!
Thanks,
Mike
Hii. Whenever I save a contact or send a text, my phone beeps. How do I stop the beeping?
This phone is perfect for me. I have had enough of all the carriers charging massive amounts for not that great service. I mean when you travel you don’t get signal, and the few calls you make nationwide cost a fortune. This phone is great, it works, is reliable and nicely priced. There are no amazing bells and whistles, all though I find it does the same as every other phone. If you’re looking for a good phone, and a good deal I would recommend this. This will be the end of carriers with their horrid contracts.
I can’t seem to get a brand new 4gb micro sd card to format in the phone. I have the same type card exactly in another (same) phone, but it was given to me already formatted & no problems. But when I go into memory card, the only option are format yes or no. When I hit yes, it briefly hesitates & then flashes an error message. The computer will format connected w/the USB cable, but then phone still does the same thing.
it is suposed to be 3 cents txting but it is charging me 5 cents…..help please
the five cents is actually 0.50 of a minute.it almost isnt a whole minute!
This is the phone i have as a business rep because its great for texting and it came with a car charger for traveling alot. If you need a phone that works, is well priced, and has good signal, i advice buying this one, it has never let me down. And im a heavy phone user. I really use this phone until the point of exhaustion on my behalf. Only wish people would stop thinking its a half grade phone, because of this phone i could have bought their fancy blackberries 3 times over i have save so much money.
Hi Greg
Amen!
Dude, wouldn’t it be better to get Straight Talk unlimited or some other unlimited plan if you use the phone a lot?
Net10 is good for people that don’t talk a lot and don’t want to have a large monthly bill or sign an evil contract.
Good point Dallas. All depends on how much he’s using it I guess.
I got this phone last Christmas, and after reading this review extensively, I was excited. For a while, this phone has been fantastic. Very much suits my needs as a college student (particularly my texting needs). Everything was fine, and then a couple of weeks ago, I began to notice that the battery was dying more quickly than usual. As you say on here, it generally lasts 3-4 days before going to 0 bars and begins to indicate it needs to be charged. Now, I charge it all night until it says “Fully charged” on the phone, and it lasts, at most, 36 hours. I haven’t ever left the phone on and not charged it until the battery finally dies. I know that the battery life diminishes a little after every charge and use cycle, but this is a bit ridiculous. Within a matter of days, the battery life went from normal to non-existent. Would buying a new battery solve this problem, or is this a phone issue?
Hi Beth
I haven’t heard of this problem before, nor have I experienced it myself on my own T401g (I have used it as my main phone for the past 7 months, and almost never turn it off completely). I currently need to charge still on the 3-4 day cycle. I don’t talk a lot, though, I mainly use it to receive text messages. It seems to me that a battery might work, but I don’t know for sure. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful on this one. Another thought is to just carry a USB cable with you, and whenever you are at a computer, charge the phone from your USB port.
A pop-up ad appeared for SyncCell on this blog as I was reading a review. I looked at the app and it looked great – I’m a former smartphone user and would LOVE to be able to sync contacts and calendar entries to my phone. I downloaded the demo. It doesn’t work with my current phone, the Moto W376G, and I didn’t really expect it to since the USB connection is basically nonfunctional. Has anyone tried it with the T401g? If it works, I’ll switch to this phone in a heartbeat! Thanks.
Emily, I hadn’t heard of SyncCell until you posted about it. I’ll try to check it out and get back to you.
Hi Emily
Well, I was so excited to try it out that I got SyncCell right away and gave it a shot. No luck, though. SyncCell recognized my phone, but was unable to access the “SyncML engine” or something like that, so it couldn’t do what it needed to.
Thanks for trying! This piece of functionality is the one thing that would get me back with a smartphone and a traditional cell phone carrier – if data plans weren’t so expensive. At the moment I have to carry two items with me – my phone and my iPod Touch.
Ok so,
Im getting a Samsung T401G, but I have to wait the longest 3 days of my life for it to ship! WHYYYYYYYY! Well hope that the days fly by for me… BYE!
did you say that you found a adapter on amazon so that you can use a headphone? could you let me know what the model number or other specifics are of that adapter so that i could purchase one?
Many thanks!
the guy who runs this blog has a link to the adapter for the samsung t401g phone in the final page of his review for the phone. i think that’s page 3 of the review.
I’m a teenager looking for a new phone after my P.O.S 3 Year Old Tracfone “Accidentally” went thru the wash. How Much Better is Net 10 Prepaid than Tracfone.
actually tracfone owns net10 but i have net10 and i think it is awesome.
Hello,
Is the reconditioned model worth it? Is it in the same condition that the new model is? Please reply, I am wondering which one to bye.
Any help wanted.
THANKS!
So far, I have one problem with this phone: I cannot get service inside my home. I can go outside and I have service. So I was wondering if you had any ideas/product suggestions for boosting the signal inside the house. Also, do you know where the internal antenna is on this phone?
Do they make stylish snap on covers for the samsung t401g?
@ blahblah
Prepaid phones usually don’t get snap on covers. also, this is a slider phone so you really can’t put on a snap cover for it because of the movement of the physical parts of the phone.
If anyone is still interested in the Samsung t401g, as of late July 2010, the phone is now being sold on Net 10s site as reconditioned and at a far lower price of $49.99. compared that to the brand-new sale, which is like $79.99. however, some people are reluctant to buy a reconditioned item at times so choose your own path there.
you can use discount entry code coupons on the phone purchase too at Net 10s site. I got about $8.00 off with two separate codes, and a free universal accessory kit with another code entered.
so basically, after i entered three codes, i got a reconditioned Samsung t401g phone for $42.00 dollars with a free accessory kit. of course there was tax to be added, but that brought the grand total to under $45.00
supposedly, as of right now, basic shipping is free with all order above 20 dollars so you don’t need to use a code for that.
be aware though, that coupon codes can become invalid with enough passage of time. this blog offers info on it. you can also simple enter the words “net 10 coupons” into a Google search to get results.
Hi GJE
Thanks for the tip. Here’s a link to Net10.
Here’s the page you’re looking for about the bonus codes:
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/deals/net10-promotional-discount-codes/
I’ll keep it updated the best I can. Both codes there are still working at this time.
Just in case someone needs to know, if you have an old computer with a SD (secure digital) card slot, it will most likely not be able read and use a new SD HC (that’s high-capacity) card. A SD HC card is usually 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB in size.
I learned this out this week. The Samsung t401g easily sees and uses the SD HC 4GB card I bought, but my old computer’s SD slot will not see it or use it. The solution is to buy a USB adapter which allows old computers to see and use the new standard of SD HC cards. You can usually find SD HC adpaters at places like Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, eBay, and NewEgg
So if you run into this problem, don’t fret, there’s a solution and no, your brand new SD HC card is most likely not defective. There should be no worries or problems for the old standard SD cards which are 2GB or less in size.
Hi! The the phone have signture setting for sms?
HELP!!!! I used the GRPS secret oode. It changed my date and time on my phone. Can anyone help me?
Where do I plug in headphones? It shows a headset where the charger thing is but I don’t see anywhere to plug any in…
You’ll need to get an adapter. I mentioned this in one of the segments of the review, but I can’t remember now which section it was.
I don’t have the Samsung t401g, but, I do have a Motorola EM326g. It seems the Browser button is easy to press accidentally on both.
I was able to lock out the Browser button by using the following sequence: Settings> Security> Lock Application> enter your security code (according to the Samsung manual use 0000, 1234 on the Moto)> scroll down to Browser and set to off. Then back out or End.
Whenever you hit the Browser button, accidentally or on purpose it will ask for the security code, enter 0000 if you want use the Browser or End if you don’t. Hope this works for y’all.
Yikes!! I just realized you had this on the Motorola EM326g review site. I found mine by playing with the thing. Sorry if I caused any confusion.
D
I may be wrong, but I don’t think that method works on the Samsung T401g model. Not to sound like a jerk, but the Samsung t401g comes with an Unlock feature that kicks on with no activity in about 5 to 10 seconds making turning on the browser or butt-dialing very unlikely to do. Personally, I find browsing on a prepaid phone to be silly and a waste of money anyway and wish you could simply turn off and disable browsing with a single choice though.
Try to put mucis on my Samsung T401g phone but unable to find the software so I can download. Is there a website or a phone number that you can call or visit to get a free download for the mp3 player that’s built in the phone.
Hi Shawnie
Check out my review, I think part 3 has info on the music player. I had the best luck with loading the music onto a MicroSD card, then reading the music off that.
I have a question. I just got this phone today and I noticed the video’s are in .3g format. But I noticed some people could get it to .mp4 format I have a microSD in it to. So do you know how to change it to .mp4 format.
There is a specific feature that seems to be available on a lot of new phones. You can transmit a radio signal to your FM stereo and listen to your music that way. This is important to me because I tend to ride in some older vehicles with just a basic radio. Is this a feature in the Samsung T401G? Sadly this could make or break the deal for me. I guess there are other transmitting options as well. Any really good suggestions? Thanks.
Hi Capinmoose
That sounds like a great feature. Unfortunately, it is not available on the t401g. I believe that you can use bluetooth to transmit mp3 audio, but obviously that isn’t helpful in the situation you’re talking about.
how do you change the message tones from the crappy ones on the phone already……….please respond soon thank you!!!!!
Unfortunately you can’t use any message alert tones other than what’s on the phone.
So i noticed the phone has an icon thats not in the manual. Its a capitol G on the top left that is green at times and red at others. Anybody know what this means?
I believe the icon you’re referring to indicates that you are connected via GPRS, which is an indication of the speed of your data connection.
If the phone is reconditioned does that mean its a bad thing???
Hi Rawr
I just posted about the Net10 T401g refurb deal:
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2010/09/03/net10-deal-samsung-t401g/
Does anybody know how long it usually takes Net10 to port a phone number? I purchased one of these Net10 Samsung phones and currently have a Tracfone. It would be much easier to keep my Tracfone number if I can, but my service expires on 9/10/10 with Tracfone and I don’t know if it’s likely that they will my number ported over before then or not. Would I still be able to activate my new phone with a new number if the request to port is not completed by then? Any help would be appreciated.:)
HI Koellerr
I just ported from Net10 to Straight Talk and it was done in a matter of minutes. Last year I went from TracFone to Net10, and then it was done in less than an hour. However, in both cases I went from one GSM phone to another. If you go GSM to CDMA, or vice versa, it very well could take longer – most likely 24 hours, but possibly as much as 7 days. So the key is to go GSM to GSM if you can, or CDMA to CDMA. Also on the GSM side, if consider the underlying carrier. In both of my ports, I stayed with an AT&T SIM the whole time. Here’s some more info that might help you out:
GSM vs CDMA: http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2008/03/16/tracfone-cdma-vs-gsm/
GSM SIM type: http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/19/tracfone-and-net10-sim-card-info/
more SIM card: http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/21/more-tracfone-and-net10-sim-card-info/
Thanks much for the info. It appears both my new and old phones are GSM so I’m going to give it a try.
I saw that Straight Talk now offers this phone on their service, this is good because if I ever get Straight Talk I can get this phone which I’m used to from having it with NET 10 and I won’t have to worry about using up all my minutes because 1000 minutes (16.66 hours)and 1000 text messages a month is more then I’d ever use plus 30mb of data is good enough for occasional web surfing or downloading of few free apps every month.
Right now I have Verizon on a family share plan that my Dad pays for and we get 1400 shared minutes a month between 3 phones with Web being extra and Text at .20 a text for 99.98 plus garbage fees and tax, the last bill was $116. With Straight Talk and the all you need plan for 3 phones after local sales tax it would be 96.75 for 1000 minutes and 1000 text each phone or you could kind of say 3000 minutes and 3000 text messages to share sort of. Of course there is the cost of the phones to figure in the one time cost but Verizon has the same thing, you pay for the new phones and they give you a stupid Check Card as the refund if they have a so called Free Phones offer with a 2 year contract and if you are a new customer they charge a boughs activation feee and if the service stinks and you cancel they charge another bough fee for canceling not true with Straight Talk where all you are out is the cost of the phones and if you have the t401g you still have a decent MP3 / movie player.
The one bad thing is that I can’t simply use my NET10 t401g even though it is the same phone because sadly you can’t just simply put a straight Talk Sim card in a identical Net10 phone and make it work with Straight Talk’s service. They should allow one to do this because it would give them more bushiness.
Is there a forum where one can talk about Straight Talk phones and services?
Thanks
Hi Dallas
Try this one:
http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php/551-Straight-Talk
I bought a refurbished Samsung T401g from Net 10 Online. 7 days later, I still have no service after endless code entry, 3+ hours with Net10 customer service, a new SIM card, etc. Now I sold cell site equipment to AT&T, Verizon, etc., and am familiar with the technology and have a degree in electronics. I was upgrading from an LG 300G, which usually showed 4-5 signal bars everywhere here. Both are GSM and should perform equally. But I got crazy answers from Net10 CS as if I was some novice who knew nothing. I never lost my temper or became insulting, but pushed and now they are Fedexing me a new one at no cost. The phone would work if I drove 2-3 miles West, but coverage was spotty, and nothing like the LG 300G, which never dropped a call, no matter where I was in the Dallas Metroplex. AT&T and Verizon phones also had great coverage. There are towers within a mile of my home. I was about ready to hang it up, but you gave such a good rating to the T401g, and I will try one more time. Thanks for the discount codes which worked nicely, when ordering. pat
Hi Pat
I hope I’m not insulting your intelligence here, as you obviously have experience with this technology, but is it possible that the new phone had a t-mobile SIM? That would be my guess based on your description of the issue.
Check out this post I wrote about the differences in SIM cards:
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/21/more-tracfone-and-net10-sim-card-info/
That might get to the root of the problem. Again, though, I apologize if I’m telling you something you already knew.
No, glad to hear it and had asked if different Sim cards used different towers. They said no, because I was
transferring a number over from my LG300G that was the same and a T-Mobile number on the LG and coverage
should be exactly the same on another G phone, the T401g. But now I wonder as I had the same thought. If the new T401g one does not work either, would it be better to switch to CDMA? Of course Verizon has the best coverage here with CDMA but would I end up on Sprint Towers, not Verizon’s which like T-mobile, does not work well in my area even though I am in Central Dallas, in a well to do area. I don’t see the Samsung R451C listed anymore which is CDMA I think, and similar to the T401g.
I appreciate any help you can offer. If nothing else works, I will simply continue to use the LG300G, and transfer the minutes back to it as with your discount codes, the minutes are worth more than getting a refund on the refurbished phone price. I already had them send me a new Sim for the LG300G, in case I had to reactivate it and transfer the # and minutes back. It has the same strong signal strength with the new Sim card as the old, very similar to AT&T and Verizon coverage though I realize one is GSM and the other CDMA. TDMA is not used any more I think. Really appreciate your help and advice. Think the Net10 coverage map is misleading as it looks like a duplicate of Verizon’s to me. Is Straight talk coverage exactly the same as Net10′s? I thought about trying it too, but will not use a Cell phone that will not work in my home. Sprint and T-mobile don’t, Verizon and AT&T do. I have no radiant barrier coating in my roof or other, that would block a signal. Thanks for your help.
Hi Again Pat
Switching to CDMA is an option for you, and TracFone/Net10 handsets never roam onto Sprint networks, so it would be straight verizon for you.
But first, I’d double check that you have the proper SIM card in your new phone. Net10 will generally comply if you insist on getting the SIM card that works best for your area. Try their executive resolutions department if necessary, or possibly deal with Cust svc rep Elston. I mention both exec res and Elston in this post:
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/30/tracphone-support/
Hi pbushx2,
Thanks and what you write makes sense, and why I continued to ask them about Sim cards and tower access, before writing you. Convincing them of such is the problem. The new T401g comest today, and then we will know for sure, and I will let you know. Then if having the same problem, I will try to bump it up to executive resolution and contact Elston at TracFone, as you suggest.
Thanks for your invaluable help! pat
After hours of time talking with net10 Customer Service, I was ready to hang it up as they could not seem to get the minutes transferred from my LG300G to my new Samsung t401g. It was the 2nd t401g as the 1st was defective, determined after trying 2 Sim cards. Well, 5 minutes on the phone with Elston Lombillo, and it was fixed with only 1 code entry. Thanks to you for writing about him and giving his email, and thanks to Elston Lombillo! Signal strength is good too, similar to the LG300G I upgraded from. Both are GSM as you probably know. pat
I just bought the Samsung 401g. It works pretty good. BUT I can’t send picture messages. I try and it says it’s sending then says “http service fail” also trying to upload a picture to face book it says, “HTTP Error: 408 Request Timeout”
Can someone help me with these problems?
Also can anyone tell me what the red “G” is at the top of the screen?
Hi Sarah
The “G” means that the phone is connected to the GPRS data network.
As for your mms problems, I’m not sure I can help. My own t401g works fine. I’d suggest trying Elston, who works for Net10′s customer service. I wrote about him here:
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/30/tracphone-support/
First let me say thanks for your blog, very helpful and I was able to use your 3 discount codes for a pretty sweet deal on a t401g.
I have been trying for a while now to get my T401G connected to any kind of a data suite so I can manage contacts from my PC without any success. I’ve read through all your t401g review and the comments but couldn’t find a solution, are you aware of one? I saw one comment from somebody saying he had downloaded the “new” version of Samsung PC studio and it worked but I didn’t have his success when I tried what he suggested, (would like to know what version of PC studio he used).
I’ve tried a couple versions of the Samsung PC data suite (including 3.2.3 which I think is the latest) as well as the latest paid version of Datapilot (all using a USB cable). Cable is good as I am able to move mp3, wallpaper, etc. back and forth from phone to PC and I have no trouble with MicroSD card I installed. But I’m stumped on getting connectivity for managing contacts. I’ve not tried to connect by bluetooth as I don’t have that on my PC but I’m guessing if a cable won’t work Bluetooth won’t either.
I have a lot of contacts I would like to upload to the phone but I really want to avoid having to do it manually. A last resort may be some kind of SIM card reader but my preference would be to connect with the phone directly from my PC. Any thoughts or tips would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
G
Hi Greg
Have you seen this message:
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/10/23/samsung-t401g-review-part-3/#comment-9426
can you listen to music on this phone through the speaker, I mean without headphones?
You can, but the audio quality is not great nor is it very loud. But it does work.
i am in desperate need of this phone. when i heard about it, i went crazy. would anyone know whether or not a gravity skin would fit it?
I’ve been told that cases for Samsung SGH T459 will fit the T401g, but have not tried it. I bought one from ebay for $5.
Amazon has some also. I will let you know if it fits.
I think there are different versions of the gravity out there so you’ll have to see if it looks the same.
I just received my samsung T459 snap-on case yesterday and at first I thought it was going to work fine for the t401. It comes in two pieces and the piece for the bottom of the phone snapped right on and fits great, but I’m having problems with the other one that goes on the top. If I get it snapped in on one side and then try to attach it to the other side, it doesn’t seem to quite reach that far. I can’t get it to stay on. It looks like the top of the t401g is either wider or higher than the case allows and that’s the reason.
Has anyone else tried a snap-on case for the gravity on a t401?
On the other hand I tried putting the t401 into the holster case that comes with the universal accessory kit from tracfone/net10 and it fits into that pretty snugly.
Is there a way to silence the audio ringer on an incoming call without rejecting the call (besides having the phone on vibrate only)? On my old phone I could silence the call without rejecting the call, that is, sending the caller to voice mail in the middle of a ring.
Hello Jessie – I tried hitting one of the volume control buttons on the left side, and that seemed to work.
Good Luck,
-Raj
Are you able to change the color of the menus, like from the white to a more darker color??
Thanks for your site. I purchased this phone on the StraightTalk plan and I bought a usb data cable. I can’t figure out how to transfer itunes songs from my Macbook to it. When I connect the two, I get nothing. Can you help please? Thanks. Betty.
When I go to youtube or any video type site on my samsung t410g and try to play a video an error pops up saying “file not supported”. How can I fix this?
I have a samsung t410g. When I go on the web to youtube and attempt to watch any video from there or any other website, an error “file not supported” pops up. I have unlimited everything and my friend has the same phone and package as I do and it works on hers. How can I fix this?
Good morning. I was wondering how to take music files from a micro sd 2gb card and install them into the phone so I can remove the card. I’ve been all over this phone and cannot do it. I selected “move” and “copy” files to phone, but they just go to the phone memory and after 6 songs, it’s full. I managed, yesterday, to get the 34 songs into the “playlist”, but as soon as I removed the card from the phone, “playlist 1″ went from 34/50 to 00/50. Someone please help me!
Forgot to check the “notify me of follow-up comments” box.
I have a samsung t301g, do you think this would be worth swiching to(the samsung t401g)?
Betty, from what I’ve heard before you have to have a micro sd card inserted in the phone to be able to transfer files to and from the phone with a USB cable.
You could also try to move files from PC to phone with the bluetooth. Or get a card reader and transfer files directly to card from PC.
JHenry, as for the phone memory, I imagine it’s not that big, in the specs it says it holds 1000 phonebook entries, and 90 calls?
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_t401g-2975.php
So if you want to listen to music on it, you will probably have to leave your card in the phone.
Hello I am planning on getting this phone for christmas this year. and though the creator or whatever sry idk what the person whoever made this site. He has said that you cant download free games or apps to this fone but there are many videos on how to do it so why say its not possible? I am just asking because I want to be able to download games and for it to work with net10 also has anyone gotten apps to work for this fone?
My Fiance just baught me this phone for an early xmas gift but i haven’t recieved it yet
whould you recogmend people to buy this phone and how is the picture messaging compared to the samsung 451c?
Thanks everybody for the helpfull postings. I bought this phone back in Nov. ’10, but waited to activate it until I had bought all the accessories I discovered would be required, since it has the Samsung proprietary jack for power & headphones. (I got OEM Samsung stereo headphones for $2.78 + shpg & a bluetooth earphone for about the same.)
When I finally decided to activate it, I met my worst customer support nightmare! (just as many of you described).
I discovered (after about two hours online & 10 hours on the phone over a period of 5 days) that the CS people have limited authority to grant some requests. I did have to have a new SIM card (which arrived the next day! (WOW!)
Unfortunately, I had over 1000 minutes to transfer (which is over the limit the CS reps can transfer). Long story short, I lost it several times with the various people I dealt with. Something about free minutes mingled in with my total minutes (from the phone I had purchased 11 months earlier!), which they “couldn’t” transfer. Then there was the “removing” my minutes from my current Net10 phone, for them to be transferred to my T401G “within an hour”. Next day, they are not transferred & both phones have zero minutes. I dug & dug to find this posting thread, to find the executive support phone number. It only took an hour or two with that exec rep to get the minutes & my remaining days of service transferred to the T401G. He said that he didn’t have authority to transfer all of my minutes but would submit a server request to override the limits for me. About two hours later, all of my minutes showed up, along with the extended service days transferred. If I hadn’t hung on like a bulldog, I would have lost out big time.
Hi Doran
I can really feel for you and sympathize with your frustration. Thankfully your story has a happy ending! Hope it’s all smooth sailing from here on out…
How can i transfer photos on this phone to my computer?
Good News: Samsung T401g is on sale at Meijer for $39.99 through Dec 24. I got it on Sunday and used “Santa Bucks” to get another $8 off. I got it to replace the LG600, which was a good phone overall but primitive for texting.
Bad News: Comes in a Net10 box but has Tracfone logo and splash screens.
Bad News: Could not simply switch the SIM card from old phone into new phone, as I’ve been able to do in the past with AT&T and T-Mobile phones. To switch service to the new phone required a call to customer service at 877-TEN-CENT.
Good News: Customer Service was courteous and friendly; I didn’t ask but I think it is based in Mexico or another Latin American country. Moderate Latino accent, some slight broken English, but nothing I haven’t been used to before in 11 prior trips to Mexico.
Good News: They said they could transfer my service to the new phone/SIM during the call. However…
BAD NEWS: New phone showed “SIM CARD REJECTED” with either SIM card inserted. I removed, “cleaned” and inserted the SIM card numerous times to no avail. (When asked, they did not provide a specific cleaning method.) They finally decided to send me a new SIM card, which would take 5-7 business days.
Bad News: Because the port was not fully completed, my LG phone was left with 0 minutes and 0 service days remaining, which would have meant no service for several days. However…
GOOD NEWS: They sent me a new SIM card within 2 days (much faster than the 5-7 days promised), and the new SIM card worked, but needed activation. Another call to Jose Jimenez got this done.
Good News: My existing service balance was automatically combined with the service balance that came with the Samsung phone, effectively giving me another 60 days of service, which I badly needed more than minutes.
Good News: sound quality is clear and distinct for both caller and call receiver. The LG phone had good sound quality on my end, but I’ve had a few complaints from the other end.
Minor Gripe: I’m more used to the smaller lighter flip-style, and I find this phone heavier & bulkier in my pocket.
Bad News: Only shows a couple bars, maybe a few, where the LG showed four or five bars. How much this means is debatable; as Apple has demonstrated with the iPhone 4, bars are a misleading and perhaps subjective indicator of signal strength and/or quality. However, while I was trying out the web browser function, the WAP dropped out twice, which is not good when it’s costing you airtime to use. I also wonder how this will affect battery life.
Bad News: The Samsung T401g exhibits a noticeable amount of “buzz” through stereo speakers which do not have sufficient shielding. Not as bad as AT&T phones, but noticeable when you get close or are talking. The LG never exhibited this.
Minor Gripe: I like using my phone’s alarm function; I’ve been doing so for several years with many phones. Most allow you to hit any button and it would snooze for 5 or 10 more minutes. On the Samsung, you must hit the Snooze button exactly, or it will simply turn the alarm off. I’ll have to learn to press that button, or just get my lazy ass out of bed sooner.
Minor Gripe: While the shortcuts can be programmed for various functions, the two Menu keys cannot. They are stuck at “menu” and “Browser”. I’d like to be able to change “Browser” to something else.
Good News: I don’t text very much, mainly because I hate texting on regular phones, and I especially hate T9. I mainly bought the Samsung thinking it would get me to text more often, and I can see where it might. It takes a bit of getting used to the slide-out keypad, because the Space bar is wedged into the bottom row of keys, but I was quickly able to to enter phrases with no errors, and without having to look at the screen (but still looking at the keypad, which is OK because I’m used to hunt-and-peck). I wish it had a predictive vocabulary and ability to learn names & words like Blackberry can, but of course it’s not a Blackberry.
so i cant seem to send a text message to my email from this phone, it asks me to enter email gateway and i dont know what number to enter or how to avoid this…
I wish someone would review the LG900G. Maybe it will allow you to copy Java Apps to it via Bluetooth or Data Cable and then install them so you don’t have to uses NET10s hit and miss Web browser in order to try and install Java Apps on the phone.
Did NET10 change their Voicemail service or change providers for their GSM Phones? I had my number changed on my t401g and now the voice mail is different, it has different features and has a feature where you can change pager notifications where you can have new voice mail notifications sent to your pager number or something called your Skytell number.
While I was in the Electronics Dept. at WalMart this morning, I saw a commercial on the TV’s from Straight Talk, showing the Samsung t401g & advertising the rate plans. I picked up a Straight Talk phone card & read the fine print on the back & saw that it is a TracPhone company. My t401g has the TracPhone logo on the phone & shows the TracPhone logo when it turns on, even though my phone is activated on Net10. I asked the phone rep, while I was on one of my marathon setup calls & he told me that TracPhone owns all three & the difference between them is the phone plans & geographic limitations. I suspect that TracPhone just bought out the others. So, my fellow Pre-Paid enthusiasts, you may finally have all three provider choices for your t401g.
On another note: I have found that the simplest way for me to transfer files onto or from my phone is to remove the memory card & plug it into my SIIG card reader on my PC. I don’t have the BlueTooth adapter for my PC yet.
I downloaded m.gmail & m.googlemaps to my phone last week, but then couldn’t find them. Today, I was searching thru my phone, looking for another item & found both of them in my Games folder. They won’t work from there.
Gmail launches Java, then gives me a message that it requires a working data connection. The last of the message runs off the bottom of the screen & won’t pan down, so I’m not sure what it says. Does that mean I need to start it from the browser? If so, how do I get from the open browser back into the games folder. Or can I somehow move the gmail to a different location?
Google Maps starts, then gives me a message that it cannot be used until I grant it permission to send & receive data over the network. How do I do that?
By the way, a big THANKS to all who have provided additional technical data on the t401g. As noted, the Net10 manual is worthless & the Samsung manual pdf is better, but is still doesn’t give you the nitty-gritty on ins & outs of really using the phone (like the item on push & hold the star (*) button, to lock the keyboard, preventing pocket-dialing. If somebody knows of a site or manual with ALL the info in one place, it would be greatly appreciated.
OK, now that I am committed to this phone (t401g) and mobile web browsing, I have spent about 200 minutes fumbling & bumbling around on the browser, with little to show for it but the 2 previously mentioned Google apps (which I can’t yet use). I know absolutely nothing about this new world. Is there a guide anywhere for us total mobile web novices, to save our precious minutes?
I have the Samsung T401G. There is an icon at the top next to the SD card icon…its a blue box, (Not the one with the G, this is on the other side of the sd card icon) and it looks like a headphone icon inside the blue box. I cannot figure out what this icon means. Anyone know?
You are probably referring to the Voice Message icon. It is located immediately to the right of the SD card icon. It means that somebody has left you a voicemail, since you didn’t answer a call. The graphic in the box is supposed to resemble a cassette tape, but looks similar to headphones. The icon box on my phone displays as black. There is a blue one situated more toward the right side, a couple of spaces from the voicemail icon, which is the Bluetooth icon. It displays when you have the Bluetooth activated.
I obtained this information from the Samsung manual, available as a pdf download from Samsung, as referenced somewhere in Pbushx2′s blog. Unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you where the icons are located on the screen. That knowledge comed from experience.
It’s better not to have the Bluetooth activated, unless you’re using it at the time, to prevent people from “hacking” into your phone service while you’re not on a call.
Does anyone have this phone with Straight Talk and tell me rather or not it has any restrictions compared to being on NET10′s service or can someone tell me where to go to discuss this phone as a Straight Talk phone?
Net10 version will not will not work on Straight Talk, according to a Net10 Customer Service person in Miami. Don’t know if the reverse is true? But the Net10 T401g costs much less than the Straight Talk T401g, and so that might be the difference. If they begin to need customers bad enough, they might relinquish.
Thank You for the response but,
That is not what I asked, I wanted to know if the Straight Talk version had any limitations or disabled functions, I know the NET10 version won’t work with Straight Talk and the other way around. I wanted to know if the Straight Talk version will run JAVA Apps since the all you need plan includes 30 MB of Data per 30 days that correct me if I’m wrong does not deduct from your 1000 minutes of Air Time per 30 days I could use that 30 MB to download JAVA Apps, with NET 10 you use up minutes when you get on the Internet to download Apps even if you get the free ones so even with the 750 minute for 25 bucks plan you can eat up talk time minutes quickly using the browser. At least with Straight Talk if I use up all my Data I still have my minutes and Text message allowance left if I have not yacked or texted them away.
Thanks
LOVE this phone. I paid 60 bucks. It works as a phone…it works as a pretty darn good camera. It sends texts easily. It can access the web, although this is a bit tough and expensive in terms of minutes but it does work in a pinch. It has a SD card slot, which means I don’t have to use minutes to send pictures to my e-mail and then download them to my computer. It also lets me record my own ringtones, which is a great joy for me.
It ain’t perfect (I can’t figure out the video conversions to watch an outside video, but I can play the phone’s recorded videos on my computer) but with the pre-paid $15 per month Easy Minutes, this is a lot of phone for a lousy $15 per month.
Hey guys,
I have a question about the audio connector that the phone can accept. I want to use my high quality headphones with this phone’s Mp3 player. Is the connector input the regular size, or some special size/shape?
Umar, you’ll need to get an adapter. It’s a Samsung-specific connector. Also, if you are the type that has spent money on “high quality headphones,” I doubt you’ll be very impressed with the quality of this audio player. It’s very basic.
I have this phone through Straight talk and it SUCKS, the ringer is up all the way and you can NOT hear it – This is my 2nd phone through straight talk previous was an LG same problem with it! There is only one “style” of ringing and that is LOW TO HIGH by the time it gets to “high”(which is still very low) You’ve already missed your call and its telling you that you have voice mail I’ve tried every ring tone that comes on it, plus ones from websites they all do it and you can NOT change how it rings in the descending to ascending mode Seems all Straight talk phones do it!
the camera takes crappy pictures very grainy With black lines going through it, even if you open the slider to take the picture( i was told to get good pictures you had to open the slider but that doesn’t help any)
you can go to many websites on it but I often get an error when scrolling through facebook on it. and have to hit the retry button when my time is up I won’t ever get another phone through Straight talk.
I forgot to mention I have the unlimited pack through straight talk, But when browsing the net it does eat up my battery but normal Talking, or just having it sit on my desk for days on end being turned on does not!.
Also the “lock keypad” feature doesn’t work very well I lock it all the time yet I get it out of my purse and there is all kinds of numbers pushed, or its opened up to use Text messaging all while telling me on the screen “KEYPAD IS LOCKED” yet it was about to call some unknown number or send a text to some unknown person Texting is slow on sending! I don’t know if the ringer is low (even when all the way on high) for all phone companies But I guarantee it is for Straight talk.. like i said previously this is the 2nd phone through them, Plus we have friends with Straight talk with other brands of phones all have the same complaint you can not hear it ringing when its all the way up on high so unless you have your cell phone Surgically attached to your hand, and you plan on getting any straight talk phone including this one I suggest you pass unless you love getting Missed calls! We are hobby breeders of parrots, We can NOT afford to miss calls and Because of this crappy phone I’ve had all our business calls changed to my boyfriends phone Which is a model (not this same one) through Revol Never miss a call on it you can hear it ring at the other end of the house with 40 Plus Parrots Chirping/Squawking We can’t hear our self think but we can hear his phone ring! and that is what matters =)
Hi Kelli
Sorry you had that problem with the t401g. I agree with your assessment of the negatives on this model. Not all Straight Talk handsets are terrible, however. For example, I REALLY like the new Nokia E71. I haven’t tried the Nokia 6790, but I’ve heard great things about that one as well.
Here’s a link to the E71 review:
http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2010/11/03/straight-talk-nokia-e71-review/
does this phone have a case? like a plastic case?
I am not aware of any specific cases. You might try looking for a case designed to fit the Samsung Messenger, as I believe this model is quite similar to that one.
Can someone plz help me wit this fone?!?!
for some reason, i cant NOT us my broadcast messaging function under the message menu…. can some one plz tell me how to unlock that??? thanks very much to whoever does!!!!!
What does the broadcast messaging function do, what is it’s purpose any way?
I absolutely love my T401g! I use the 30 day Monthly Plan-$50 for Unlimited talk, text, and web. Plus the MP3 player, and camera (don’t like it not having a flash, but I have a good camera if I want to talk better pictures) is just an excellent deal for me. True, you cannot access big websites like YouTube, but I can Facebook all day and check my email accounts all the time! I would though, like to know where to buy the USB cable and the connector plug for the headphones, or some type of AUX plug I can connect my phone to my car to listen to the MP3 player while I’m driving. Thanks for any help you may be able to give me!
FYI I now saw some snap-on cases for the T401g for sale on ebay
ITS 20$ ON STRAIGHT TALK
We recently switched my husband’s Net10 T401G to the 750 minutes/$25.00 a month plan. Now the phone will no longer allow him to go on the internet and it is charging 1.00 unit per text rather than the .30 unit it has previously charged when I was adding airtime manually.
Is this normal? I hunted all through Net10 website, however there is absoulutely no mention of these two glitches anyway. The only thing I found was that these minutes do not roll over and that you will lose any previous minutes you had on the phone.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
It says on the Card that you will be charged 1.00 per text (in Mice Type of course so it’s easy to miss if you are not aware of how they hide restrictions in the fine type) and it should have sent you a text message or prompted you stateing that you will be charged 1.00 per text and you have to re send the air time pin number to confirm, at least that is what happened when I switched.
That is the catch for 750 minutes for only 25 bucks.
NET10 is better then the contract cell phone service providers but they are still a cell phone provider so they will find ways to make money.
Thank you so much for your help. I actually switched online rather than buy a card so maybe I missed the “mice print” (I love the way you put that) when I signed up.
Do you happen to remember if there was any mice droppings, oops I mean print about internet access being restricted?
Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate that you took the time to answer.
I did not have any Internet restrictions but I did not really test the Internet access much, only went to a few web sites.
Now that I had to replace the first t401g I had after loosing it I’m having problems downloading large files, they never complete and the phone just goes back to the previous screen without any error message of any kind.
My first one was the one that did not have the Tracfone logo on it and did not have the “A service of Tracpone” power on screen and it did not have this problem.
I didn’t even realize there was a different version of this phone. My daughter also has a T401g and she has the logo, however she just received hers this past Christmas.
My husband uses my old one which we bought over a year ago. I will have to check his phone later and see which version he has.
If all else fails I will just have to call customer service.
Again, I thank you so much for your help.
How can I get a direct connection to a supervisor at NET10 so I can change my number that will use AT&Ts network making them send me a new SIM Card. When I called NET10 Customer Service and told them I want to change my number to use AT&Ts network and the rep told me I had to call AT&T if I wanted to use AT&T so apperently they did not understand and thought I want to get AT%T as my Cell Phone provider.
Right now my number uses T-Mobile’s Network and I have problems downloading any apps that are not very small. I have a Samsung t401g that is the newer version with the Tracfone Logo but I had a t401g before but lost it so I replaced it when it went on sale at Bestbuy. I never had the download problem with the first t401g I had, the only problem I had was the forbidden error but when I was able to connect to searchtruth.com /wap/index/html I was able to download all the programs successfully but with the new phone I can only download 2 small programs.
Go to Straight Talk’s website. You can get it used if it’s in stock or only $20. I just got mine and can’t even tell it’s used at all.
I have this phone and it’s some ways it’s getting on my nerves, it has some annoying problems like you can’t install JAVA APPS on it by copying the JAR Files to the Phone or Memory card and then installing the app from there so you have to use the browser to access the Internet and try to install JAVA APPS and that is unreliable because it has problems downloading any files that are not real small. and the browser stinks and will get the insufficient memory error and you can’t simply download Opera MINI or Bolt because the phone does not allow Java Apps to access the network.
Other annoying things are when the battery gets low it goes into power save mode and when that happens you can’t play music or view videos and there is no way to change that by setting the phone so it will not go into power save made when the battery gets low.
The Music Player has a real annoying feature where if you pause it for more then 2 minutes it will exit the player, who thought this was a good idea? It’s not like it’s a Audio CD where it has moving parts that might wear out if it is paused too long and the laser has to keep tracking that same area on the disc. Also in order to play music with the music player and pipe the audio via a Bluetooth stereo speakers you have to add the song to a play list which has a limit of 50 tracks per play list.
If LG Made this phone it would be near perfect like the LG900 but I don’t like how tried to be like a Blackberry and has that number pad integrated into a QWERTY Keyboard making it awkward to dial numbers because the numbers are small plus the * and # are not in the regular place next to the zero like on all phones with just a keypad.
It’s a great phone for making phone calls because it has a great number pad with buttons that are nice and big and easy to operate and sending Text messages because it has a great slide out keypad and not an annoying touch screen.
I use the T401G phone with Straight talk. I have found a way to transfer pictures and convert mp3′s to wave format so that I can send sounds to others on this phone.
1. To Send Pics to your phone. Send a text to your computer address, that will give you your phone address.
First go to one of the free sites that I use, Phonezoo.com, Myxer.com, Zedge.com. Transfer the pic to your computer. Then you can transfer the pics to your phone using your email program.
2. I found a great converter, that converts MP3′s to wav format which will work on this phone, and you will be able to send sounds. Here is the link to the software to convert: http://www.any-audio-converter.com/ Just copy and paste, download the converter, add the sounds you want to convert, use you email program to send to your phone, and you are good to go!
Hope this helps someone. I hated not being able to send sounds with my pic messages, but there is a way!!!!
I received my Samsung WEP 460 bluetooth headset a few days ago. I paired it with my net-10 phone which is a Samsung T401g (which I got 2 weeks ago). When I push the multi-function button it beeps once and automatically dials the last # called. It doesn’t give me access to the voice activated feature. I can answer calls with it. I have deleted the headset from my phone twice and re-paired them together with the same result. I have contacted Samsung customer service via their website and was told that the headset and phone are not compatible but it could also be a hardware problem (little confusing) yet on their website they recommend that particular headset for my phone.
